本稼働システムが企業によってリプレースまたは廃止される前にメーカーのサポート・ライフサイクルの終了に達すると、セキュリティ・リスクが高まる。セキュリティ／リスク・マネジメントのリーダーは、インフラストラクチャ・チームと協力して、サポートが終了したシステムのアタック・サーフェスを最小限に抑えなくてはならない。
セキュリティ／リスク・マネジメント (SRM) のリーダーは、サポート対象外のOSやアプリケーション上でビジネス・クリティカルなシステムが実行されており、社内に技術的負債が生じていることに気付いていない場合がよくある。
OSやアプリケーション、ミドルウェア・コンポーネント間の相互依存関係により、サポートが終了したコンポーネントだけをアップグレードすることはできず、システム全体のアップグレードが必要になることが多い。

ビジネス部門と協働して各システムのリスク・プロファイルを定義することにより、サポートが終了したシステムのうち、どれを廃止し、どれを継続運用すべきかを決定する。少なくとも、ビジネス上の重要性、使用量／頻度、接続要件を評価する。
補完的セキュリティ・コントロールを適用することで、本稼働環境に残っているサポート終了システム (廃止予定のものを含む) のアタック・サーフェス (攻撃対象領域) を縮小する。
サポートが終了した本稼働システムに必要なツールや手順の変更を特定するために、インシデント対応／復旧手順を準備して実践する。
