The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) is a U.S. statute that prohibits discrimination based on mental or physical disability. The ADA establishes disability as a protected class, which provides people with disabilities with similar protections against discrimination as the Civil Rights Act of 1964. In addition, the ADA created accessibility requirements for public accommodations and mandates that employers provide reasonable accommodations for employees with disabilities. Numerous other countries have also enacted laws that extend protections to people with disabilities.
