CEOs expect more from the CHRO

Seventy percent of CEOs expect the chief human resources officer (CHRO) to be a key player in enterprise strategy, but only 55% say CHROs are meeting this expectation. Even fewer CFOs agree (30%). Many HR executives are ill-prepared for this greater responsibility. In fact, only 20% of Fortune 250 CHROs have working experience outside the HR function.

The amount of time we spend on executive compensation and governance is crowding out time we used to spend on other critical talent issues.

How we address your top challenges

Talent is one of the biggest differentiators of organizational performance, reshaping the head of HR’s role into one of the most high-profile C-suite positions. With 63% of CEOs concerned about the availability of key skills, nearly half of all CHROs are spending more time discussing organizational strategy with the board than they did just two years ago.

Work with the board

Boards at top-performing companies are twice as likely to have a deep understanding of talent issues as those at lower-performing competitors. You must push your board to expand talent conversations beyond executive leadership and compensation, to include engagement capital, employee value proposition, workforce planning, executive performance, evaluation and CEO succession.

Manage the HR leadership team

You should focus your HR leadership team on activities mapped to the top business priorities. The best CHROs also create succession plans to develop rising leaders and spread HR leadership responsibilities among their direct reports.

Partner with C-suite peers

You must build trust, align thinking and coordinate your actions with your peer CxOs. This includes onboarding new-to-role executives, partnering on cross-functional strategic plans and embedding talent into CxOs’ decision making.
