Blue Bell’s King Cake Celebration

By: Mackenzie Baker | Jan 06, 2020

Blue Bell Ice Cream is getting fans into the Mardi Gras spirit with its “King Cake” ice cream.

The Mardi Gras King Cake flavor is a fan favorite and has traditionally only been available in select areas each year. However, this year the company is releasing the limited-edition ice cream nationwide. It includes cinnamon cake ice cream with pastry pieces, green cream cheese swirl, and festive colored sprinkles. Ice cream fans can get their hands on half-gallon sizes for a limited time. The Texas-based company took to Instagram to announce the release, inviting fans to “join the parade” and grab a half gallon while they have the chance. Many ice cream and confectionery brands, including Blue Bell, boast a strong following on Instagram, according to a Gartner report, so it makes sense that the brand would choose the visual platform to build buzz around the new promotion.

Blue Bell announced the ice cream release on January 2nd, more than a month before the actual Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans. While other food brands including Jimmy Dean and Halo Top released special items for the December season, Blue Bell is differentiating itself by releasing a product for an entirely different celebration, just a week after the end of the holiday season.

With the Christmas comedown well under way, Blue Bell’s new nationwide flavor release may inspire more food brands to embrace less acknowledged holidays.
