Fox Sports Gets the Ball Rolling

Fox Sports is celebrating the return of live sports with a remodeled mobile app for iOS and Android devices. The app includes an updated interface that makes it easier for users to find specific content and a “dating app” inspired appearance where users can quickly swipe through top headlines and read at a glance. Those with a cable subscription can connect to the Fox Sports app to view live games, current game scores, and key matchups. When watching live games, viewers can also click through a new “Bonus Cam” feature to see unique camera angles from other parts of the stadium, providing viewing access not typically seen via a TV broadcast. 

Fox Sports has been in the process of overhauling its app for the past two years. With the re-launch of live sporting events following the Coronavirus pandemic, the brand can now formally debut its new-and-improved mobile app to eager fans. The app announcement arrives a few days before Fox’s opening post-pandemic broadcast of its first-ever quadruple MLB header on July 25. While updating an app typically helps brands increase downloads and retention, according to a Gartner report, by also advertising its first game broadcast on the app, Fox Sports could further incentivize downloads. In addition to modernizing its app in time for the return of live sports, the brand also revamped parts of its website. Several features and designs included in the Fox Sports app will be available online, including “Bonus Cams” and the ability to swipe through headlines. 

Fox Sports’ new mobile app could appeal to the millions of fans who have spent their lockdowns consuming sports sparsely and digitally. Additionally, the redesign to fit consumer preferences could usher in a new era of portable, port-pandemic sports entertainment.
