Restaurant’s Cooking Crusade

By: Mackenzie Baker | Mar 30, 2020

Americans are ordering takeout en masse to support restaurants and workers affected by Coronavirus closures.

The Great American Takeout is a social media campaign created to support the restaurant industry. It is already endorsed by hundreds of brands including Visa, PepsiCo, and Panera Bread. For the campaign, customers were asked to order takeout on March 24th and post pictures of their to-go meals on social media. Social media users were encouraged to spread the word to friends and family by sharing the hashtag #TheGreatAmericanTakeout. The campaign quickly gained traction on Twitter—the platform most often used for campaign launches by restaurant brands, according to a Gartner report.

Though national restaurants including The Cheesecake Factory, IHOP, and Applebees participated, the campaign particularly encouraged diners to order locally, as smaller restaurants are suffering the most right now. Many restaurants introduced contactless delivery to help ease customer fears about ordering food. The Great American Takeout will continue throughout the Coronavirus pandemic—though other options for supporting restaurants include ordering gift cards, ordering merchandise, or donating to restaurant worker relief funds

While restaurants have a lot on their plates these days, The Great American Takeout campaign got a full community cooking up support for their favorite eateries.
