Are there any drawbacks to using a BaaS (backup as a service) provider? What are they?

In general, Baas is a good idea for most companies.  like all aaS's there are many choices and the service selected should match the company's needs. And of course, even though it is a service provided by an outside entity you should test the restore on a planned basis to ensure that the service is working and can be implemented in a disaster.

Of course there is the upfront and long term costs that you should consider. But beyond that you have to remember your internal teams also have to understand what it takes to not just set them up but also take use them when they need to. The other thing to consider is whether you need these as hot/warm ( readily available) vs cold (store then away but it’s ok to wait 24 hours to use them) there are practical reasons why you should understand what kind of backup service your getting and why. The last thing you want to do is pay for something because your org thought it was a good idea, but it really doesn’t add value when you actually need it

Call me old school, but physical access to your backups, is still a good idea, whenever reasonable; at the very least, spread securely around to different geo-diverse locations, under your control.

Most BaaS platforms are costly upfront, but overtime they should become a value-add.

Upfront costs would be the biggest drawback. Also, training your team on how the service works takes time. Backups are a business critical application, so spending the time to make sure everything works and is tested. It is also crucial to make sure your team understands and practices the restoration process in the event of a future need.

Based on my experience, Baas is very good for the company to use to prevent any loss in the local case of disaster. what you should think about is the business need for the backup retention duration and the budget for the backup as well, because from day to day the backup cost are increase.
If a regular backup, I recommend google with reasonable cost.

But if you prefer the VM backup I recommend AWS because they have many tiers of storage to store different kinds of data and with flexible cost.

Cost would be the only major consideration here, but this would all have to depend on the data that is being backed up. BAAS is a great service option, esp. considering the storage guarantees and knowing someone is monitoring the backup processes. Whilst i hate admitting it, as a CTO in my career we have been caught out a few times where backup processes hadn't worked for a week or so before someone caught it. Luckily we were able to just fix the issue and keep moving but lesson learnt!!! Would have been a catastrophe if we had an event!

Without a doubt - Technical Debt! It's a ball and chain that creates an ever increasing drag on any organization, stifles innovation, and prevents transformation.
