How has the current talent shortage impacted your budgeting strategy?
VP in Construction, 51 - 200 employees
With remote work, hiring is more difficult. If I want to hire a software developer, he'll charge more than what I pay the person that is already with us because he wants to work remotely. He doesn't even want to come to the office, so what do you do? If you really need to deliver, you just have to employ that person. Then the business owners or the board tell you, "No, the budget cannot take care of that particular person." Then you may have to look for a software developer that is not as skilled as you want them to be, which increases the time you spend developing just one app in the long run.Worldwide Strategy & Portfolio, Cross Industry (Supply Chain, ESG, Engineering, Customer Experience, Intelligence Automation, ERP) in Manufacturing, 1,001 - 5,000 employees
You just have to get creative in how you attract and retain the talent. With the attrition, everyone is looking for something particular, so do you have what the person is looking for? Is it remote, full time? Is it in-office? What policies and what do you have in place to incentivize someone to come work for you? We're trying to factor in all of those things and give it a margin, given the severe labor shortages in the tech space. It's a fine balance between the touch points and the cost aspects. The competition between Facebook, Google, etc., are plucking people right out of the talent pool. Now it's about trying to reach the talent earlier to attract them to the company, that’s what I've observed.

Do people come in with an opinion or a preconceived notion as to how much they'll travel or not travel?

I think almost everyone does but we are really good at level setting and trying to work through that. From the service provider side, the companies don't often want you to come on site anymore because of the cost associated with that.
