How are you handling individual situations where a remote employee has moved too far from an office to realistically participate in an RTO policy?

Our company was flexible about those people who got hired in the pandemic - they will continue to work from home whereas those who were hired at other times have to come into the office or move out unless you make alternate arrangements with your leadership

Communication has not always been clear about this at the start of the pandemic and the remote working policies kept changing.  Some people sold their house in town and move to country side.   Now, with 2 days at the office + must attend occasional team meetings, it becomes harder for them.

Some exceptions exist but the vast majority of employees need to comply.   A few people even retired sooner than expected to avoid returning to the office.

With more than 10,000 employees, many different personal situations exist.   You need to keep a right balance between being fair with everyone but at the same time, trying to save your most valuable resources.

Our company was quite brutal about it. They gave a six month warning 5 day in the office was coming. About 3 months in people could volunteer for a severance package that was reduced compared to standard severance (in USA, most other countries have more laws). Then at six layoffs started. They didn’t do them all at once. My observation is they are targeting areas they wanted to reduce staff in

They monitor badge access to all buildings and occasionally you hear about someone they let go because they were not coming in. I think the larger the company the more strict they are
