With the rapid expansion of the Internet of Things (IoT) and the increasing reliance on various wireless technologies such as 5G, Bluetooth, WiFi 6, and WiFi HaLow, what are the pros and cons of these technologies, and what are the major concerns and challenges that could impact their future development and security in IoT systems?

The first issue with IoT is hackers and security otherwise, it will become integrated into our systems.

The pros are obvious - rapid digitization, ubiquitous connectivity, AI to the edge (eg Tesla) etc. The challenges/cons would be “security”. Traditional “device security through EDR” approach doesn’t work. Some of the IoTs are designed in a hurry (time/cost pressure) without much regards for “security” and this may have implications without boundaries (Eg - Roomba like vacuum cleaner leaking private photos). Consumers and businesses are quick to justify the need for IOTs but often ignore complimentary need for investment in security gears. Everyone’s bought smart speakers, iot cameras, iot locks etc and a few (if any) spent on security. All of us can do the math ;)

No IoT Device should trust the underlying network and always end to end encrypt, the fixing of the bugs needs to be done by the IoT supplier without undue delay - european - cyber resiliency Act will help in speeding up.

The benefits include connectivity, mobility, scalability, and speed. However, there are considerations like interference, range limitations, and power consumption.

The major challenges include security vulnerabilities, interoperability issues, network congestion, and privacy concerns.

Without a doubt - Technical Debt! It's a ball and chain that creates an ever increasing drag on any organization, stifles innovation, and prevents transformation.
