When you reflect on a year of remote work, what are your biggest takeaways as a technology leader?

Sr. Director of Enterprise Security in Software, 5,001 - 10,000 employees
I hope the whole industry looks and goes, "Okay wait, hold on. Why are we excited to come back to the office?" In my mind, the office should be a destination, not an obligation. I should go there to meet people to have meetings. I should go there because I want to spend some time with my peers. We can do update chit chats on Zoom so we can involve a lot of people, but let's go have lunch. Let's go have a face-to-face together. Let's do something together that's about connecting. Let's make the office a destination.

I moved to Santa Cruz during the pandemic. I bought a house out here. I don't want to drive to Palo Alto five days a week anymore. That's a 90-minute trip each way. Each week, 15 hours of my life that I'm not going to get back. I don't have to deal with that and I can be way more productive working from home. My team is pretty geographically diverse, so we're looking at coordinating when we should go in together, rather than feeling like everybody needs to wake up and drive there five days a week. We'll see what happens, but yeah we definitely are opening a new building, celebrating having a new headquarters. We're going to open it up to everyone and see what happens.
VP, Director of Cyber Incident Response in Finance (non-banking), 10,001+ employees
As somebody who runs an incident response team, and somebody who sits at home all day long, whenever I would visit the security operations center in Cincinnati, I found that I got more done by walking around while I was there. I could just pop my head into somebody's cube and say, "Hey do you have a few minutes," rather than having to schedule a half-hour or hour block to have the conversation.
CISO in Software, 51 - 200 employees
Audits are more organized now remotely because now instead of the auditors being on-site and chasing down people throughout the office and saying, "I need a screenshot of this or that," or "I need documentation of this," now it's just an email, a shared folder on Box or whatever. You dump it in there, and now it's much more organized. You also have that paper trail of, "Hey I sent an email to Tim requesting this information, and now it's magically sitting in this folder at his leisure."
President and National Managing Principal in Software, 501 - 1,000 employees
Companies that have invested in digital workflow capability prior to the pandemic are doing well, we were able to keep that going. I think that same type of workflow will continue even with some onsite reviews because it’s the same argument I make for watching my ninth-grader and my sixth-grader in school right? I hope that they still manage assignments and things like that in Google Classroom because it gives me the ability to sit down with them and go through their assignments. That particular tool is an example of something that I hope has some staying power.

Without a doubt - Technical Debt! It's a ball and chain that creates an ever increasing drag on any organization, stifles innovation, and prevents transformation.
