Yes agree as the data necessary for evaluating ESG criteria are not always available publicly as private companies are not always required to disclose information related to ESG issues, such as carbon emissions (E), diversity and inclusion (S), and board decisions (G). Even for publicly listed companies, information that may be required to assess how they function with respect to some E, S or G factors may not be available to the public. Therefore, regulators and policymakers should play a vital role in promoting ESG investing.

II do agree that the policymakers need to play a larger role so that the ESG outcome is not limited to optics, it delivers real desired results similar to CSR.

Regulators have an important role play in promoting Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) by creating a regulatory framework that ensures companies are held accountable for their impact on the environment and society. The regulators should also facilitate that investors have access to the information they need to make informed investment decisions. In fact, Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has substantially revised the annual Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report (BRSR) required by the 1000 largest listed companies in India. So, it shows that actual execution is being done by regulator in India.
