Going to work each day and then dealing with life outside of work can result in forgetting about what you want, career wise. Someone may be unhappy at work for years and not know it because they haven’t yet invested 45 minutes to really think about it. Barring a dramatic organizational change or event, I think its necessary to move on when no longer challenged and work life is void of risk. I personally look for roles that push me beyond my current skillset so I’m driven to prove myself to myself, especially when I doubt myself.

If you are not happy you should switch, that's what the professional attitude should be. If I am working at a position, it confirms I am satisfied.

When in the individual's opinion if the value that they bring to the organization from the role and the value they get from the organization from the role, both of this are diminishing to a level of insignificance then it is time to move on.

May I ask, why one would stay in their role if they were unhappy? How does one decide when it’s time to move on?

I think it’s always good when happy at a role to consider what’s next - a lot of what we are enjoying today we build years ago.

Might be lack of capability to take new responsibilities or some financial liability
