What role does IT play in sustainability efforts?

IT has an opportunity in this area because it can make sustainability efforts more effective for the company, both in managing and observability metrics, etc. IT can also implement change that allows for more efficient operations, as well as implement change in IT specifically, no different from marketing or sales. Every organization has to have its own improvement objectives apart from trying to improve the broader company operations. But it's easy for the modern company to capture the majority of its impact in IT. Whether it's your own personal data centers or capacity you use from a partner data center, cloud provider, or some combination of those, a lot can be done with your global networks. Many people don't realize that networks have one of the biggest impacts on sustainability and energy use in general. So they talk about moving to the cloud only to realize that they're spending more and potentially creating more impact because of the increased network traffic.

The three pillars of sustainable development of economic development, social inclusion and environmental protection need IT as important enablers. IT in any forms will therefore play a very fundamental role in achieving the sustainable development. IT and green IT will also empower new generations to adopt all the major change in their way of life and help us.

Technology uses a lot of energy but there are ways to work toward reducing consumption. Following data center best practices, such as: Harness outside air cooling, automate controls for lights, unplug and remove zombie servers that are just sitting in the rack  using energy but aren’t doing any computing, move assets to the cloud  where the larger scale can allow for more efficiency and upgrade legacy systems  that  require more power and have  larger sizes with outsized heat output,

As with "everything" IT should be there to support the business line and when possible drive solutions.  We should be partnering with facilities for environmental sustainability, HR for personnel sustainability, and business line operations for productivity improvements, reduced waste and process improvement.  We should be driving economic and environmental sustainability with our own products, leveraging new technologies and looking inwards to improve our own processes. This is a continuing conversation where IT is adding value to the business and driving improvements and efficiencies across the board.  Asking "what problem are we solving" and be the leader to deliver solutions that solve that problem.

IT can help reduce real-world resource impacts through the virtualization of business processes, thereby eliminating the need for paper, printing, and transportation in many cases.  However, as others have noted, digital processes consume power for operations and cooling, and the computing devices rely on rare elements for components (semiconductors, batteries, etc.), so care must be taken in how computing resources are deployed.  A scalable cloud-based strategy is a popular and potentially effective mitigation route, though the environmental impact of for-profit cloud providers is, in itself, potentially problematic.

IT and Facilities have the greatest impact, particularly as it relates to power consumption. Additionally, IT can provide the tools for the organization to plan, implement, and manage sustainability efforts across the enterprise.

IT can make a difference to the overall sustainability goals set by our companies. Current our out of date data centers are one of the largest impacts my company creates on the environment. We are going to be delivering four new centers that operate completely differently and will truly make a difference to the carbon footprint of the company.

IT is typically part of any industry having a notable impact on sustainability, though sustainability is often an afterthought if not considered an unnecessary burden in the first place. However, oftentimes sustainability goes hand in hand with reducing costs, streamlining processes, and mitigating risks.

Your organization may produce products/services from running your own data centers, colocation or using public multi-cloud vendors.  Ensure you and your data center or cloud provides have a strong commitment to sustainability goals that are transparent (and published).   In addition, your office space (your own or leased) should be included in the sustainability goal.   You should do the same for vendors who sell you desktop/laptop equipment, network equipment and SaaS providers who delivery application as a service from their own data centers or over the cloud.

IT can have a positive impact by leading the way.  Defining key measurables and providing data-driven insight to other business units will create synergy and alignment across the company.  Acting responsibly within areas IT has total control.  Partnering with other departments to collaborate on more efficient processes with better sustainability outcomes.  Use technology where it makes sense for this purpose.

IT has many opportunities to support sustainability seeing as no organization (except perhaps in a barter business model) can function without it. Technology is such an essential and all-encompassing aspect that it also behooves us to act in a way that is responsible and cognizant of the impact our decisions and what we decide to implement have on sustainability. A few areas we can have an impact are power consumption automation, a more paperless workflow, eliminating unnecessary / redundant appliances and applications, and streamlining operations whenever and wherever we can.
