Does continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) weaken an organization’s security posture?

Top Answer: Ultimately, everything has to shift left. Everybody has to be hyper-aware and have tools in their integrated development environment (IDE) when they're coding, compiling, testing and when they're pushing to whatever repository—then do that again and again. InfoSec security has to be at the beginning of every project, not at the middle, not at the end. Compliance and legal can be discussed later but when you're looking at the CI/CD process, you really have to lock it down and you need that verification. You can't just let code in and assume it’s fine. Ask SolarWinds, what could happen if you let the systems go through? Ask Experian what happens when you don't have a fully-managed view of your servers, code, vulnerabilities and patch managers.

Top Answer: In a perfect world it shouldn’t, since security would not be an afterthought, but rather a part of the day to day normal way of working. In a non-perfect world you might look to compartmentalised those “quick’n’dirty” agile deliveries that every IT team are ask to provide… and then secure and import them later once it has been proven that they will live long enough to warrant it.

How have your developers been affected by remote working?

Top Answer: At the company I was working with last year, we found that because the developers were remote, there were less interruptions for them. They were more able to focus. So whilst we may have lost some ground in things like user acceptance testing (UAT) and activities like that, we found we made up for it in terms of the developers’ increased ability and the productivity of the developments.

What real-time code detection solutions have you found success with?

Top Answer: We've been prototyping and testing Rapid7 and we like them. On the application security side, the code side, they're definitely good. We did find some false positives and you always run into that challenge early on when a new product is being launched. The piece that we have really focused on is automated penetration testing. That's become a key area for us: you no longer want to rely on Point-in-Time Assessments of what happened 1-6 months ago. There are a lot of technologies out there now that are doing a good job of continuous testing. We have pretty good control because our repositories are secure. There is a workflow around authorization in terms of how code gets deployed, 2% have to review it so there's manager approval.

At your organization, how much regression testing for new app features is done manually vs. how much is automated?

Top Answer: Hmmm, we do 100% automated except in a few places where it is not possible.  We are starting to deploy robot arms and so advice mobile testing capabilities to shrink those parts.  Still a little catch up work on a few legacy technologies.  We test too often for it to be manual.
