Hybrid Cloud
Cloud Infrastructure Strategy in 2021Cloud Infrastructure Strategy in 2021

This survey focuses on the pain points driving the decisions for Cloud Infrastructure and the overall approach towards it.

If you had a magic wand - what's the #1 daily business challenge you'd eliminate?

Top Answer: Without a doubt - Technical Debt! It's a ball and chain that creates an ever increasing drag on any organization, stifles innovation, and prevents transformation.

Is the cloud space at a pivotal point, and if so, where will it go in five to ten years?

Top Answer: We will see hybrid cloud, including multi-cloud, for the next five to ten years at least but the hybrid mix will change. The big conglomerates will always adopt a multi-cloud set-up even for public cloud. They will not just fixate on GCP, AWS, Oracle Cloud or IBM. You will always find two or three hyperscalers or cloud providers in a big enterprise.  Another change we’ll see is that instead of having 70% of workloads in their own data centers or in a hosted environment, that split will become the opposite. Today, it's typically 70/30, with 30% on public cloud and 70% on-premises, but eventually it will be the other way around. And the percentage that is on-premises will slowly go down to 10% in the next ten years.

We're in the process of migrating on-prem apps to cloud. Any best practices to share for cloud integration patterns?

Top Answer: Your migration plan would slightly depend on which public cloud you are using but a common pattern would be to migrate a VM or app to test environment and find out the dependencies before hitting the production move.

Is it viable to change ERP provider when upgrading? i.e. Oracle to SAP. What reasons would drive your decision to even consider an alternative?

Top Answer: Probably a very heavy lift and hard to justify a business case . Usually such decisions to move from one ERP to another has to be made due to some compelling underlying drivers . In my experience - most of the problems faced by ERP users are rooted in bad operational design, lack of system proficiency and organizational complications such as unclear department responsibilities, lack or missing functional roles , disconnected systems and data relationships etc

How do you keep your cloud infrastructure, applications and data secure in a continuous manner?

Top Answer: Depending on the cloud vendor you use... We use Azure Security Center, Microsoft Defender for Cloud, Azure Sentinel, enhanced with Azure Monitor and Azure Automation so you don't have to do everything manually

Is stability / uptime a concern for you with your cloud provider?  Thinking back to AWS' major outage in 2017, shouldn't we be past these issues? https://www.zdnet.com/article/ibm-cloud-outage-downs-customer-websites-globally/?ftag=TRE-03-10aaa6b&bhid=29349190877791638188562104926226&mid=12873514&cid=2259891406

Top Answer: It should be a concern.    No Hyperscaler is immune,  and we're not past these issues. AWS confirmed on 12-07-2021 "it was experiencing issues in the US-East-1 Region" that took down business and consumer services.  Many companies have already adopted a Multicloud strategy.  Moreover, it makes sense to use cloud service providers with complementary capabilities so that the business maintains access to best in class technologies.
