Early implementation and support excellent, over the years things have wavered.

    Overall Comment

We have been a customer since V3.9 in 2001. for the most part our experience has been positive. The company over the years seemed strained at times and appeard to implement cost cutting measures which hurt there product representation and support. They are not the company they used to be. They have turned into more of a status quoe by offering services and support on par with there competitors instead of differentiating them selves in the market place.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

Work with them on standardized pricing, and watch out for hit and run sales tactics.

What do you like most about the product or service?

The centralized integration arround there common technology engine. Single pane of glass approach.

What do you dislike most about the product?

They have integrated so many offerings into there central management tool that it has become cumbersome. The product sprawl has become some times unmanagable.

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

I wish they were more engaged with long running customers, in regards to product design and direction.

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

Verbalize to CommVault over the years that lack of representation and not presenting major changes in product platform would not be tollerated. We would have also made sure that there was a consistent hand off between AE(s), and SE(s) over the years so they understood our needs and requirements.

Comprehensive portfolio of backup and recovery features

    Overall Comment

The Simpana portfolio covers a very large set of features. As such it can be overwhelming at first to understand and continues to be complex to deploy and manage. Having a good relationship with either Commvault or a 3rd party is essential. Make sure you know what challenges you are trying to solve so you do not over buy. We've worked exclusively with Commvault and their pre/post sales support has been terrific.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

Make sure you know what challenges you are trying to solve and what you need before you engage the vendor. We chose to implement the software and hardware independently, however there are now integrated, certified solutions that can accelerate deployment with no additional cost vs DIY.

What do you like most about the product or service?

Comprehensive feature set, you can protect almost anything anyway you want. Terrific customer support and engineering.

What do you dislike most about the product?

    Complex to deploy and manage

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

Provide a more responsive, intuitive and universal GUI (they still use Java)

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

Do a better job of comparing costs, especially if you expect your environment to scale and grow significantly. Run different scenarios to compare. We've had to undergo a difficult licensing change to manage cost, though Commvault has been very supportive.

Backup and Restore options very granular

    Overall Comment

granularity of CommVault solves lot of problems. For example, VM level backup i can restore files not the whole VM.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

like mentioned above, get involved and you will learn so much in deployment. Commvault is very complex tool.

What do you like most about the product or service?

tool is very complex, backup and restore options are very granular and i think it meets lot of users needs.

What do you dislike most about the product?

    none

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

understand what the custome ris asking for instead of assuming.

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

be more involved in deploying the product ground up

Reliable and fully featured product providing traditional backup and restore functionality

    Overall Comment

CommVault backup and recovery solutions cover a broad swath of IT real estate. They do a good-to-great job with the capabilities they bring to market. Support was weak in the earlier years, but has matured and is now solid.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

Understand all the features the software provides - there may be some capabilities that provide a huge return on your investment, such as global dedup for example.

What do you like most about the product or service?

    Reliability and feature functionality.

What do you dislike most about the product?

They seem to be falling behind some of their competition in the area of copy data management. Intellisnap is a start, but the capabilities it brings either need to be enhanced or the actual capabilities should be better defined.

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

Their path to move from an agent-based licensing model to a capacity-based model is rediculously expensive and thus largely prohibitive. If this model provides real value to the customer, which one has to assume it does over the long haul, then make the transition less painful financially.

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

Deploy global dedup at the outset.

Great support, complex backup system with features for the future.

    Overall Comment

Our implementation is a little too complex for our needs. We use about 35% or the total features available to us with this product.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

Contact Commvault PS before you implement.

What do you like most about the product or service?

    Stable

What do you dislike most about the product?

    Complexety

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

Offer more initial cosulting and setup help, without charging.

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

We would involce solutions provider sooner for installs and upgraded.

Implementation could be better if architecture design could take more time on details

    Overall Comment

Overall was good. Had hiccups when dealing with non-standard requirements. Some challenges came from the fact that we had very limited detail knowledge with Commvault products initially. The process could be improved if CommVault team can summarize frequently seen implementation issues/gaps of understandings, put those as active reminders for new implementations.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

never overlook comlications shat learning curve can bring up, even if it looks simple initially

What do you like most about the product or service?

significantly reduced tape consumption, and IO transfer

What do you dislike most about the product?

meta info handling seems slow even with powerful boxes

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

Mkaing up to date reminders for new users with no or limited knowledge of the product, recommend longer architect design engagement for a complete and les challenge implementation

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

high light the retention strategy difference, such as cycle, from other solutions leave bigger safe buffer when estimating space requirements for somenon-standar backup scenario
