    Product(s): Veeam Backup & Replication

Backup solution that actually works and is easy to implement, configure and manage.

    Overall Comment

When we migrated from VMware to Hyper-V, one of our first challenge was to find a good backup software. We tested a few backup solutions but either they were too expensive or they did not work well with Hyper-V. When we tested Veeam, we were happy to see a easy to use backup solution that is not very expensive and it actually works. When we started testing it, initially we have some small issues that Veeam support and the development team were very helpful in resolving. Knowing that Hyper-V is a new environment so any backup solution would have some issues. What we liked about Veeam was that their support team was very responsive and they extended our trial period till all of our issues were resolved. We like that the software is easy to install, configure and manage. It is not complicated like some of the other solutions. It works well too. We are a very happy customer of Veeam.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

Test thoroughly. Don't try to fix problems yourself. Keep in touch and work with the support team to resolve your issue during the testing phase etc. This way you will also get an idea about their support quality.

    Product(s): Veeam Backup & Replication

It's true Veeam "just works", but requires special considerations in larger deployments

    Overall Comment

Working with the vendor before installation allowed for a successful deployment with relatively few surprises. Because our implementation was more complex than an average deployment, there were some parts where the vendor knew the feature was possible but lacked documentation on how to implement it. We used Veeam to perform a datacenter migration of over 1,000 VM's consumin over 100TB of storage. Because our application stakeholders needed assurances of the technology, we were able to do a complete mock-failover into a sandbox, allowing stakeholders to test their applications without requiring any downtime to our customers. Additionally, because our previous replication technology was block-based, we were able to utilize the those existing replicas as pre-seeds in Veeam to greatly reduce the amount of data that needed to be on the first replicated, seeing up to 90% reduction of data needing to be replicated.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

Veeam support is very helpful, be sure to use them especially when performing initial configuration. The documentation is sometimes lacking the latest best practices and/or known issues and workarounds that you may only find out about from speaking with support.

What do you like most about the product or service?

Integrating into VMware allows for us to take advantage of features of VMware we were unable to use when using our previous replication technology, such as storage vMotion, storage DRS. Additionally, the Veeam One product (part of the suite we purchased) is incredibly valuable in finding issues before they become problems.

What do you dislike most about the product?

By depending on VMware's API's, Veeam is at the mercy of the VMware to provide accurate data to replicate. VMware has had multiple bugs where their Changed Block Tracking (CBT) has not been accurate. This has invalidated all of the backups and replicas. Veeam has worked to address this through their SureBackup and SureReplicas for verifying the validity of the replicaitons.

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

A running joke our team has is you know what level of support you are getting based on how hard it is to pronounce their last name. HQ'd in Europe, the Veeam team still seems to have the most talent overseas, making it hard to coordinate available times that work for both us to work on a problem. Ideally, more subject matter experts would be based out of the US.

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

"Hot add" mode has faster throughput but takes much longer to start replicating than network mode. If dealing with many smaller VM's with relatively low change rate, use network mode for replication and save hot add mode for the larger VM's with higher change rates. Also, Veeam works best with VMware version 6.0 and above as Veeam uses VMware snapshots when performing replication. Prior to 6.0, VMware needed to "stun" a VM when committing a snapshot, which potentially could cause customer-facing impact, depending on the sensitivity of the applications running on the VM. In order to get the most throughput from your replication, special care needs to be made when sizing the data movers (also called Veeam proxies). Be ready to scale wide vs. scale up, especially when using network mode. If using Cisco Nexus 1000v VDS, be sure that all of your network groups have unique names. We have a pair of 1000v's for each of our ESXi clusters and had been using the same name for networks on the same VLAN. Veeam did not handle that well, forcing us to make each of our network group names unique. Once done, however, Veeam worked very well to move networks over during migration with zero touch.

Integration & Deployment - Overall comment

A lack of documentation for specifics, such as use of Cisco Nexus 1000v made integration a challenge. The ticket took over 2 weeks to resolve.

    Product(s): Veeam Backup & Replication

A little slow on recovery, but 100% effective for backups and restoration.

    Overall Comment

Veeam is a very simple product to set up and use. It is extremely powerful when recovering from backup. We mostly use it to recover individual files or emails from Exchange. The interface is intutive for users of all levels. Their support is also top notch and I always get a person to talk to when I have needed to call in. The software allows setup of multiple repsitories, eliminating the need for DFS replication across network sites. Updates are handled quickly and notifications are communicated effectively. The one negative issue I have experienced is that when you are recovering files the interface moves slowly when you are loading a large set of data into the backup browser. However the files are there every time and no corruption has happened, so a little patience is the least I can offer for such a great service.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

Get this program. If you are a VMware customer then this program works so wonderfully you will question why you didn't start using it earlier. It is also cheap!

What do you like most about the product or service?

The fact that it just works and the support given by the company.

What do you dislike most about the product?

That it is slow to load recovery databases when they are large.

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

    Nothing.

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

I would add a cloud repository. This can be done at any time. I would also look into Cloud Connect recovery options.

    Product(s): Veeam Backup & Replication

The product performs well and has reduced our administration cost and improved our process

    Overall Comment

The product performs well and has reduced our administration cost and improved our backup/recovery processes. They have a good communication channel for upgrades and patches. We have used support several times over the years and the support team is knowlegable and helpful.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

Make sure you take time for additional planning and configuration in the enterprise environment. You will need additional disk storage available and data bandwidth to accomodate multiple back streams.

What do you like most about the product or service?

Overall, it performs extremely well and integrates well with our VMWare environment.

What do you dislike most about the product?

Would like to see a product that does not require Windows licensing.

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

It would be great if there was an option to implement the Virtual Appliance using the latest Ubuntu server.

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

Initially, we used a separate product to archive disk images to tape for longer term storage. We learned that the built-in tape management features of Veeam were better and more flexible than the current solution. We implemented the entire Veeam solution in year two.

    Product(s): Veeam Backup & Replication

A stable and mature backup solution

    Overall Comment

Our overall experience has been excellent. The product is mature and fully featured. We utilize Veeam for the backup of our VMware environment and have a local, offsite, and tape backup. Restore speed is limited only by the speed of the storage and I've greatly appreciated things like the active directory integration that allows restoration of individual users from active directory. It has been an excellent solution for our environment. It's never let me down when I've needed it.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

As with any potential technology solution, know before you start talking to vendors what you need so you can look at their solution in your paradigm rather than the vendor simply showing you what they're good at.

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

I would look at more options for a backup target. Veeam is just the software portion of the backup solution, you still need a hardware target to back up to, and they vary drastically.

    Virtual backups and tape redyuction

    Overall Comment

Recent efforts have focused on increased use of the tool to increase the extent of virtual backups. This fits with moving away from tape-based backup systems in order to reduce governance liablities (eg examination of tape storage locations. Good, practical tool.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

    Consider vitual backup.

What do you like most about the product or service?

    Readily deployed. Easy to use.

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

    Nothing springs to mind!

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

Not a lot. Veeam has been in use for a while and has proved its worth. Further deployment remains ongoing as CapEx allows.
