    Flexible tool with awesome support

    Overall Comment

One of the best vendors I have worked with. They were there for us the whole time and continue to be very supportive.

What do you like most about the product or service?

    Flexibility

What do you dislike most about the product?

The tool is very flexiable, but it is missing a few creature comforts of fully mature tools.

Could be prettier but you probably won't find all the features at this price.

    Overall Comment

This is a low-cost product with substantial capabilities. This is a double-edged sword that the vendor will acknowledge. You can get lost in its flexibility. The user interface is standard Microsoft offering and could be improved, but other than its unappealing heritage, is mostly intuitive. There are exceptions such as how to link related objects. You have to be clear on their terminology to do so effectively. The licensing model is a bit choppy, only the designer license can make changes to the model which unfortunately includes the attributes of any entity. Get more than one designer license! Installation is a snap for the local component but connecting to the enterprise repository on their "cloud" is not simple and seems over complicated with multiple encrypted/signed files being generated. If it doesn't work exactly right you have to start over completely. Why not just use federation? We've completed our Meta model and have populated a significant amount of date. We're still in the process of linking the entities so can't speak about what the mature implementation is like. If I had to do this again, I would indeed keep Abacus high on the list.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

Be sure the person holding the "Designer" license is dedicated solely (or nearly) to the implementation and population of the repository.

What do you like most about the product or service?

Familiar interfaces, breadth of capabilities, modular design so you can grow with it, and fairly easy to use.

What do you dislike most about the product?

Licensing model, ugly interfaces, useless 3D modeling.

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

Combined the various licenses into a single license. We are a small team of 7 that does a lot of project work. Waiting for one person to complete the design work or to make relatively simple changes for the rest of the team is a bottleneck. This, unfortunately, makes the likelihood of the tool's full potential being realized questionable.

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

Tie the output from the tool with one or more business-driven goals. This would have helped us define the capabilities in the context of the business. By involving the business more, I believe it would have kept the team focused on the implementation. The task of populating the tool set and building the entity-to-strategy relationships is continually deferred for other, higher priority tasks.

    Product capabilities - overall comment

Covers all the bases the other tools do plus a little more.

Service & support - overall comment

    Always prompt and helpful.

Integration & Deployment - Overall comment

Integration could be better but suffices and it's not an expensive tool. Deployment locally is easy but integration with their enterprise repository could also be better.

    Excellent product with great flexibility.

    Overall Comment

The product has lived up to expectations. It excels in flexibility, which was an important criterion for us. It is extremely easy to change/extend the metamodel.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

Spend the time up front to make sure you understand your requirements, and use them to drive your product evaluation. Think about what you really need, and what you want to achieve by acquiring a tool.

What do you like most about the product or service?

The ability to easily extend or tailor the metamodel to capture the information we need to track.

What do you dislike most about the product?

Introduction of new features is somewhat slow - typically an annual point release with 8 to 10 new features.

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

It would be nice if the vendor provided more opportunities for learning about the product (webinars, etc.)

    Product capabilities - overall comment

There are some limitations with formatting of diagrams and charts, but overall the capabilities are good.

    Good EA Repository Tool

    Overall Comment

The Product like most EA tools requires a high level of expertise to use effectively. The most useful features is the EA repository. The Meta model is easily extensible, data constraints can be easily added to improve data quality and import/export of data is very easy. Have not used the diagramming extensively in current engagement but have found it useful in the past for documenting technical architectures. Complex Overlays on Business architecure models are hard work and more often that not require programming which reduces the supportability of the tool. We use it (in our current low level of architecture maturity) primarily for the repository and enforcement of data cosntraints. Diagramming is done in viso using Catalogues from Abacus.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

Consider as strong tool for EA repository. Easy to use. Also consider for some viewpoint creation but avoid viewpoints that require programming unless you have the ability to sustain that expertise in your EA team.

What do you like most about the product or service?

Ease of use as an EA repository.

What do you dislike most about the product?

level of skill required to use the tool effectively.

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

Fits our business need, but we will not leverage all features as we perceive them as too diffcult to maintain expertise in the organisation

Product is very easy to use, very flexible, and technically satisfying. Buy It.

    Overall Comment

Strong product and very good support from vendor.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

Dedicate a team for the product, gather as many documentations you already have, and do not fear to try different approaches with the product.

What do you like most about the product or service?

Flexibility, business coverage, vendor support and attention

What do you dislike most about the product?

The designer could be even more flexible, and some functionalities are really missing. But the vendor keeps upgrading its product regularly.

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

We should have bought more licences right from the start.

Nice tool to consider for creating architecture models.

What do you like most about the product or service?

    Great support from the company.

What do you dislike most about the product?

There are opportunities to improve UI.

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

    N/A

Implementation was easy, support is outstanding, tool is flexible and constantly improving

    Overall Comment

Very good experience with vendor in both consultancy and support areas, Tool is flexible and data gathering tooling is excellent, reporting capability is good, would prefer better drawing capability.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

Identify your core needs before selecting tool, be realistic about what is achievable. Start small, Gather data (which is the hard piece) and then start communicating value of the tool, that way you can solve issues under the radar and then start showing value of tool.

What do you like most about the product or service?

    Flexibility

What do you dislike most about the product?

    Drawing tools.

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

    Better drawing capability in tool.

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

Keep scope narrow at the start, and complete one area to prove use.

Extensible EA Platform with powerful scenario building and sharing features.

    Overall Comment

Avolution was very patient with us while we worked internal processes to vet, pilot, and recieve buy-in from key stakeholders. Avolution took the time to ensure we could hit the ground running and operate indepedently. The Abacus platform itself is very flexible and extensible. The hybrid Abacus EA framework really does take the best of breed components from other EA frameworks into one that is immediately useable. Extending the metamodel to meet our needs is very simple and powerful process. The ability to "evolve" architectures to represent alternative scenarios is really one of the killer features for us. We can quickly draw up various scenarios which has proven helpful in new technology evaluations, all without standing up seperate development environments or sandbox systems. The platform is easy enough to learn and it is very simple to get started. The roundtrip import capabilities made it easy for us to migrate our EA data from a legacy system into Abacus. The web publishing feature is also a key capability for us, this is paramount for us to drive adoption and awareness of our EA practice.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

Assess the maturity of your EA practice, and tailor a program around that. The EA platform landscape is very broad, select a platform that can grow and change with your organization. Abacus is a good fit for us because we needed to drive consistency and discoverability into application modeling, application portfolio management, and system to system dependencies. It is comforting to know we can later expand use of the tool into Strategy Management and Business Process Management down the road. The ability to share the EA information with our entire organization without discrete user licenses was a big plus for us. Think about how you would like to share your EA information with your organization. Easy and intuitive access to EA artifacts was key for us to gain adoption from our community.

What do you like most about the product or service?

The relatively low cost to entry was attractive for us, because we felt like we could get a lot of value from day 1 without having to dedicate a lot of resources on a full blown EA data capture effort.

What do you dislike most about the product?

The analytics and visual reports are a little weak, but we are not using those features very much at this point. Other platforms have more visually appealing analytic charts, graphs, and timelines. However, many of the reports require a substantial amount of architecture information to be captured. Examples are application license and support costs, system to system dependencies, underlying technologies, and skillsets required to support. These types of attributions require a great amount of effort to capture in order to produce meaningful analytics. This is why we did not put a heavy weight on analytical capabilities when selecting an EA platform. One other aspect, which is true to any other platform, is the ability to easily bring in Visio diagrams. It is often times much faster to redraw diagrams within the platform then it is to use the import tools.

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

The only thing the vendor did not do was an on-site engagement. This in the end was not absolutely necessary, because the vendor made ample time for us via web conferences and phone calls. But everything else was above expectations from a pre-sales engagement perspective. Our proof of concept spanned over 12 months due to shifts in our priorities. The vendor was very patient with us and was not aggressive in forcing us to make a decision.

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

Start small, build up capabilities from there. It's not all about the tool or platform, the first part of establishing a successful EA practice is to get the attention and buy in from key stakeholders. Get a platform that fits the size and needs of your organization, introduce the value to those whom would benefit the most up front. We needed to improve on some very basic EA functions, mostly process and culture driven. Once we gained traction in these areas, an EA platform made more sense for us.

    Product capabilities - overall comment

Regarding architecture modeling, scenario planning, and application portfolio management the tool has been excellent.

Service & support - overall comment

So far we have had a great experience with response times and answers to support questions.

Integration & Deployment - Overall comment

Because Abacus does not require an enterprise RDBMS, it was simple to integrate into our environment. The only issue we have currently is the thick client installation has a problem with our anti-virus software. We have a workaround thus far until a permanent solution is discovered.
