Steep learning curve we hope pays off.

    Overall Comment

While Gartner is correct in assessing this vendor as innovative and supportive, we have been disappointed in the MEGA HOPEX tool's long learning curve and lack of built-in framework. We have had to resort to delaying our implementation while we develop a metamodel from scratch; there is no default metamodel in the software unless it is for the "City Planning" example that record names and infrastructure are supplied for, and which cannot be changed to something more relevant. The vendor wants to spend training class time that we paid for to learn about our business so they can help us create a metamodel, because there is nothing in the database to support any metamodel. We suffered from being an early adopter of the new "HOPEX" version, for which training materials and debugging had not been done. Even after training materials were updated for the new version, some of the material was still in French. Trainers have not been able to answer our questions, having to research and promising to get back to us, and then not always following up with answers. We have hired additional 3rd party help to try to accelerate the implementation, which we still cannot show any results for after two years. When we asked how to generate reports and models, we were directed to coding and formatting reports from scratch. We have yet to be able to create any models. On the other hand; the vendor is very actively updating the product, for which each new version requires a re-install of the system. We have hope that the new versions will live up to the promises and we will find the tool much improved and able to provide us with the kind of analysis and modeling we need to present to leadership to show value for the investment in EA.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

Include hiring 3rd party implementation and utlization support in your plans. Enterprise Architects do not have time to learn the data entry and technical steps required to utilize this product.

What do you like most about the product or service?

    Promised functionality including modeling.

What do you dislike most about the product?

    Lack of built-in functionality.

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

invest more resources in making the product useful out of the box, building some basic structure into the tool to improve productivity and usability. Develop a standard default structure for government agencies that would be re-usable by many of their clients.

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

Make user-friendliness, automation and automated interfaces a higher priority in our evaluation of products. Also, understood the limited value of the Gartner Magic Quadrant, which rates vendors, not products.

Service & support - overall comment

Support has been great, except for the noted turnover and apparent lack of knowledge of the trainers.

Integration & Deployment - Overall comment

We have not found the level of integration promised during market research to be easy to attain. It is true you can import Excel spreadsheets, but significant amounts of work are required on the "template" that has to be built to accomplish that.

    Product(s): Mega

Rollout was painless but adoption has been very slow.

    Overall Comment

The Product has a somewhat steep learning curve to leverage all of its features. If the mappings are not done right the ability to derive value is not fully realizable.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

Focus on training and understanding how to map the data in the metamodel. Define the desired key EA metrics .

What do you like most about the product or service?

The product does provide value if used properly.

What do you dislike most about the product?

    Learning curve is too steep.

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

Provided better and tailored training that clearly teaches how to use the product.

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

Avoid using the TOGAF module as it is incomplete and will require customization.

    Product(s): Mega

Flexible for architects; more capabilities delivered, simply needed for info. consumers.

    Overall Comment

Not as far on the journey toward maturity as we had thought at the time of implementation. Has come a long way and company worked with us to enhance the capabilities delivered by the solution. The tool is targetted for architects and our user base for consuming the information captured in MEGA was far broader (and they found it difficult to use).

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

Consider the consumers of EA information as well as the architects who are providing the input to it.

What do you like most about the product or service?

    Flexible object model.

What do you dislike most about the product?

    Service model needs more maturity.

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

Less hype - more structure around collaboration.

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

Explain to leadership the difference between CMDB and EA toolset requirements.

What do you like most about the product or service?

    Good company to work with.

What do you dislike most about the product?

    Rigidity.

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

    Reduce customization.

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

Evaluate additional products with a different model to architect.

    Good support

Integration & Deployment - Overall comment

Not so open for integration based on API.

Powerful tool but has a few bugs.

    Overall Comment

Mega is still a little immature, but it has potential.

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

It is easy for users to introduce errors into the system. They need to spend more time error proofing it.

Implementation was easy and rich of features for online consulting

    Overall Comment

Product performs really well in order to create a repository of multiple objects and links between them. Support is somewhat deficient, so need an internal expert. Repository customizations are quite simple, but reporting is a mess.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

Negotiate prices carefully because it is quite expensive. Make sure you have a metamodel expert internally to make forms modifications easily. Don't expect out of the box report to fit any needs. Custom reports are a nightmare to generate. The tool is made for online consulting, so buy enough license to allow people navigating in the objects themself.

What do you like most about the product or service?

The product allows linking everything to everything, which is amazing. For example, you can tie an org unit, an application, and a technology together so that you can report on them (or find links) in any directions. Like a data warehouse dimensions. Missing links can be added pretty easily, so you can get information on everything easily. To generate impacts schema or recommendations, it's fantastic.

What do you dislike most about the product?

Technical/functional support is not really fast and cooperative. Easier to go through the community instead of support. When training hours are bought, they do great, but for bugs and smaller questions, it's often never resolved.

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

Explain / Sell training hours about information publication methods. they targetted more on the richness of the information other than how to publish it.

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

We would buy the license that allows customization up front. We tried to do multiple work around to avoid this and make the implementation harder. Once you have the customization license in order to add missing fields or objects, it's a lot easier.

    Product capabilities - overall comment

Only publishing information is problematic. Everything else is good.

Service & support - overall comment

When a call is opened, we get a confirmation that it is opened. 9 times out of 10, we never hear back from them.

Integration & Deployment - Overall comment

Suggested architecture was working, but with multiple speed problems. They should not suggest and implement configurations with known problems.

Implementation was successful thanks to the consultants who understood our specificities

    Overall Comment

In our company we are currently using Mega Hopex, for IT Portfolio management. We selected Mega because the vendor team was very concerned with understanding our needs and specificities. Later, we were not disappointed since the consultants kept being highly supportive. Technically we had decided to install Mega with a cloud architecture, which was a first in our organization. In that respect, our technical team needed additional support that Mega kindly provided.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

The Mega data model is rich, so it's worth spending time to understand how the standard works before deciding to customize. Spend a little bit of time to adapt the user interface to his needs.

What do you like most about the product or service?

The standard capacities of Mega. It's an extremely rich tool.

What do you dislike most about the product?

The quality of Mega is to offer a rich data model and many functions. The counterpart of this quality is that MEGA is complex. It's worth taking time to understand its logic.

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

Transfer more detailed information about how our customization was handled, so that we could master further upgrades.

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

We had decided to attend Mega Trainings after the implementation, which was good in some way because we were mature for the training and we had questions. On the other end we probably lacked knowledge to fully understand how the tool works. By consequence we made mistakes in the end-user's trainings (which we ran ourselves). We could have made things simpler for the end-users.

Integration & Deployment - Overall comment

The technical deployement was easy thanks to the choice of the web interface. Then the deployment took time because of organizational issues within our organization, these issues were not due to Mega.

    Good match and constructive partnership

    Overall Comment

Full match when it comes to our vision related to Enterprise Architecture and how such tool should support it nowdays.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

MEGA is a toolbox (giantic one), don't try to use it all. Focus on some concepts and push them further. Think big, start small.

What do you like most about the product or service?

It is pretty flexible and you can easily adapt it to your context, as soon as you know know what you want to achieve!

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

    Nothing

Very well integrated toolset can supports all aspects of Architecture.

    Overall Comment

Very good and well integrated toolset, that really helps getting good insight in your IT landscape and enables you to analyse potential transformations that are needed.

What do you like most about the product or service?

Needless integration between the different models.

What do you dislike most about the product?

Sometimes long time needed to get solutions to issues. Training and documentation can be improved.

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

When a company starts and EA discipline, they shall have understanding for small steps that are needed to establish this.

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

Start with the ITPM module to set up architectural discipline, then extend to other modules.

    Product capabilities - overall comment

    Tool brings what architects need.

Service & support - overall comment

In general good, could sometimes be quicker.

Integration & Deployment - Overall comment

one of the strengths of Mega.
