    Product(s): Troux

A rich schema and set of capabilities, with a clunky user interface.

    Overall Comment

The schema is mature and flexible. The tool hasn’t changed much in the last 10 years, so the user experience is clunky contributing to a poor overall user experience. A technology refresh on the user interface would greatly improve the value of the tool. A new insights capability is a step in the right direction.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

Be sure to explore the tools using internal pilots/assessments.

What do you like most about the product or service?

Rich tailorable schema. Multi-user with enterprise class service.

What do you dislike most about the product?

User interface - clunky at best.

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

Modernize the user interface, a top priority. Get a human factors expert to eliminate the amount of effort required to manually enter/update information in the tool.

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

Evaluate a few modern offerings and the ease of migrating legacy information into those more modern alternatives.

Learn to manage your metadata before you dive in.

    Overall Comment

The scope and breadth of solution advertized was in alignment with our needs in establishing a mature Enterprise Architecture Practice. While the system functionally met the needs, it was quite limited in its ability to deliver the highest level capabilities around modeling, data integration and proper UI design for data stewardship. In addition, the licensing model was in poor alignment with the federated data stewardship model we intended on employing. In the end, we divested ourselves after only 2 years.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

Understand your data stewardship model before engaging.

What do you like most about the product or service?

Consulting and implementation services were better than most vendors.

What do you dislike most about the product?

    Poor data entry screens.

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

A more thorough POC would have exposed the limitations.

Service & support - overall comment

    Great support team, always available.

    4+ Years of Troux

    Overall Comment

Troux has been in use for several years for us with very meaningful information, however managing the portfolio is very time consuming, in particular the lifecycles of each product. When we approached Troux on integrating with Technopedia/BDNA to maintain this manufacture lifecycle they were able to do this with some professional services, however they were limited by license what they could expose to the customer (this may have changed by now). The real benefit of an EA tool like Troux is only realized with the data is accurate and up to date, if the leadership doesn't have that commitment then it's unlikely to be accepted as a useful tool. Also limiting is the way Troux does their licensing, in order for the organization to benefit from the solution the entire organization needs to be able to access it - the cost to do that was too much for us so it was scaled back to only those that maintained the data - big mistake for us. Make sure you work with your sales rep to ensure everyone in the org has the necessary access needed to understand the value of Troux.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

Negotiate all users to read the data in Troux.

What do you like most about the product or service?

Ability to map business functions and capabilities

What do you dislike most about the product?

Licensing and lack of integration with manufacture lifecycle data.

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

    Integrate with manufacture lifecycle data.

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

    1. Ensure senior management is truly committed to maintaining the data. 2. Ensure the entire organization has 'read' access to see the standards. 3. Integrate with manufacture data such as Technopedia/BDNA.

Service & support - overall comment

Upgrades are a bit tedious, no self-service, you have to open a ticket and work with their support group.

    Product(s): Troux

Powerful and flexible product that is more effective with strong guidance from experts.

    Overall Comment

The consulting arm tends to take a "Tell us what you want" mentality that works great with mature EA organizations, but causes confusion with organizations that are still trying to establish foundational practices.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

Form the questions for which you want answers, to scope your modeling effort before you start.

What do you like most about the product or service?

The information is fresh and available for all users via the repository. This reduces the redundancy of work in keeping multiple documents up to date.

What do you dislike most about the product?

The visual modeling/diagramming tool is almost an afterthought. It's clunky to use, and limits visualizations to what's available in the web-based BI/analytical tools. All the information for a network connectivity diagram is in the repository, but creating that kind of diagram is painful.

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

Provide stronger guidance on how the entity types fit together into the big picture. Too many answers of "it depends" forced us to rely on trial and error to figure out, what any specific type really represents.

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

Instead of focusing on a specific metamodel domain, focus on the entities and relationships that provide the most useful reports and analytics.

    Product capabilities - overall comment

It is definitely not an all-in-one toolkit, and benefits from having a narrower focus.

Service & support - overall comment

Growing pains from the recent merger have had an impact on operational support.

Integration & Deployment - Overall comment

Growing pains from the recent merger have impacted operational support.

Gets the job done, not an easily customizable product and fairly pricey

    Overall Comment

Good Tool, does what we need it to do. A lot of work to maintain and update data. The metamodel is very comprehensive and fixed. Takes a lot of effort to customize. A Large effort to generate new reports (needs to be done in the backend). Don't really use a lot of the out of box reports and visualizations. Learning curve to feel comfortable with the tool and understanding objects relationships. Consulting services were good at first, however now it is very difficult to ask a question without having to go through a formal request and paying for it. Currently undergoing migration of the IaaS provider at the request of Plainview, losing VPN tunnel to directly access the database to be able to develop reports. Having to pay additional costs on our end in order to develop work around.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

Very comprehensive metamodel that will have everything you need in it. Make sure that all the out of the box offerings are all that you will need as it will be difficult and costly to make changes and develop your own reports.

What do you like most about the product or service?

Broad offering of an enterprise architecture repository and application portfolio management.

What do you dislike most about the product?

Not easy to make changes, no modeling functionality with their product. Paying to have to ask a quick technical question.

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

Not have to pay for consulting when it is just a quick question that would take a quick 10min call to discuss. Better understand how they are offering their REST API services to ensure we are within the agreement. Have a position on application to application integration so that we can automate updates and know that we are still in compliance with the licensing agreement.

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

Gone with a full SaaS implementation model instead of purchasing perpetual licenses. Further evaluated other products.

Service & support - overall comment

Good for what we need them to do, and they are willing to work with us.

Integration & Deployment - Overall comment

Went with a SaaS setup wasn't that difficult for them to stand up. Did it fairly quickly. Complied with all our network security needs.

Good partnership team, good EA data management, with more reporting, maturity still needed.

    Overall Comment

The vendor was responsive and had a great vision, and supported us very well. The product suffers from a few limits that have forced us to supplement its features. Specifically, while you can manage your EA data reasonably well in the tool, consuming it in a way to empower the organizational decision makers is not feasible in the Navigate tool and we were much better served writing reports in a 3rd party tool from the data managed by Troux.

    Product capabilities - overall comment

more needed on the business architecture side, and reporting but otherwise good.

Successful Implementation may need to structure your data to Planview metamodel rather than your own

    Overall Comment

Newly implemented at my organization. Being used as an Enterprise Portfolio tool and helping with Application Rationalization. Lots of fields available to capture many attributes. Great as a single source of truth for Application Portfolio along with Communications, Software, hardware cataloging etc.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

If you expect flexibility in the metamodel, make sure you bring that up front with Planview so you know what to expect.

What do you like most about the product or service?

Great tool to capture all your enterprise portfolio and help with application rationalization.

What do you dislike most about the product?

Some perspectives contain different fields than the editable views.

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

Allow more flexibility in the metamodel.

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

Be prepared to use Plainview metamodel. May end up filling in more data than what you were expecting just to take advantage of perspectives, reports etc.

Troux is key in the development of our EA practice

    Overall Comment

    Good experience with Troux.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

Understand your EA goals up front. Troux / Planview EA Practice Directors are a great resource that you must take advantage of.

What do you like most about the product or service?

Very well defined meta-model. The Insight tool provides robust reporting / BI capabilities.

What do you dislike most about the product?

The Troux Architect modeling tool can be difficult to use.

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

    Nothing of note.

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

Have a well-defined scope for the initial implementation /adoption. The difficulties were not with the tool, but rather a lack of EA experience.

Good Product for the IT Department.

    Overall Comment

Planview has a well thought out EA model with which to model an organization applications, technologies and investments. The UI is intuitive enough to be picked up quickly and is flexible enough to allow for the rapid changes in complex organizations. The adoption of meta-model enforces changes in governance and environment awareness by stakeholders which changes behaviors for the benefit for the organization.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

Do not worry about getting the data in perfectly the first time out. The data of your organization is in constant state of flux, use this tool to manage and visualize that change.
