    Product(s): Sparx Systems Enterprise Architect

Great product, but requires up front planning to ensure long term adoption

    Overall Comment

We chose to do our own implementation of Sparx Enterprise Architect because we had staff that were familiar with the tool. The modeling and metadata capabilities of the tool are impressive. The price point is perfect for a company of our size. Unfortunately, we did not budget enough time or resources in order to ensure a successful implementation and continued adoption following the initial implementation.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

Leverage an implementation partner to get us up and running. Develop a model for keeping content current. Look for opportunities to show value.

What do you like most about the product or service?

    Cost and flexibility

What do you dislike most about the product?

    Too flexibile

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

Leverage an implementation partner to get us up and running. Develop a model for keeping content current. Look for opportunities to show value.

Service & support - overall comment

We have had very few issues with our product since we have gone live.

    Product(s): Sparx Systems Enterprise Architect

Perhaps the best starter tool you can choose (and fits into a limited budget).

    Overall Comment

We needed a starter modeling tool for our teams, which had started to use a lot of different specialist tools, not to mention Visio. That was OK until we needed to collaborate on an enterprise component model, in preparation for a DC migration. We needed to be able to analyze dependencies and relationships for latency sensitivity and other concerns. With Sparx Systems Enterprise Architect, we were able to get well over a dozen teams to document their components into an enterprise-wide model. We then started using the tool to kick off some Business Architecture efforts and that's where we started to stall out a bit. Read the other comments to understand why.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

This is a good tool if you need to start building an EA repository on a limited budget, just to show what can be done and to move your projects forward. Use the tool to generate artifacts and then make them easily available to others who won't use the tool.

What do you like most about the product or service?

Wide number of models (UML, TOGAF, Archimate and many more) mean you can do just about anything in it -- at a basic level.

What do you dislike most about the product?

The diagrams could be more aesthetically appealing. Doesn't run on a Mac and have to use a Windows VM. Have to use the app to browse outputs.

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

Having to install a thick client app like this limits the number of people who will go into the tool. Exporting artifacts into static views restricts you from providing dynamic views. I wish that we could easily publish models and diagrams into a Web-based read-only view that constituents can browse.

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

We would have put the Cloud Server option in place faster. File-based synchronization across dozens of users on a big project started to show cracks. The cloud server fixed those problems.

Integration & Deployment - Overall comment

Initial roll-out is just installing the software - we did set up the floating license server. We also set up the Cloud Server. I wish you didn't need a different SQL Server database for each project, though.

    Product(s): Sparx Systems Enterprise Architect

Good for basic capture of planned workflows.

    Overall Comment

Good for basic designing at a high level via activity diagrams, and for capturing workflows in sequence diagrams. Does not handle requirements well, and does not integrate well with other applications. Access to previous versions and auditing are difficult to implement. Not a great repository of past information, as it is self-managed folders. Have had to fall back to Visio for flexibility in creating diagrams for general consumption.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

    Good starter tool.

What do you like most about the product or service?

    Simple to use and access.

What do you dislike most about the product?

Rigid diagrams. Lack of 2-way interfaces. Lack of text requirements.

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

Provide more free-form flexibility in the diagrams, possibly as an overlay. Provide linkage to individual text requirements.

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

Find an inexpensive tool that combines the versioned capture of text requirements with the flexible creation of basic diagrams.

Very complete modeling suite. It needs more Automatic interation to TOGAF.

    Overall Comment

Very mature tool. Very complete modeling suite. It needs more Automatic interation to TOGAF.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

Be sure you have the modeling capability in your team to create clean models and artifacts.

What do you like most about the product or service?

Compliance to wide range of standards and modeling techniques.

What do you dislike most about the product?

Lack of capacity to cross check models in order to discover any reducancies or incomleteness.

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

More focus on the ROI out of the models and the technical artifacts. More capability to generate intelligent reports (e.g. what are the missing software components or data elements, what are the redundancies in the IT landscape).

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

    Nothing for that project scope.

Service & support - overall comment

We didn't have to request a lot of support. But when we required some answers, the support team were responsive even before we pay for the tool.
