Rethinking our first try with Microsoft

    Overall Comment

Users enjoyed the product experience because it integrated well with Office Applications. We very much struggled with ETL timings. We also struggled bringing up 3rd party products to improve integration with Oracle E-Business Suite.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

Consider the short-term and long-term goals of BI and Analytics in your company based on your current maturity level.

What do you like most about the product or service?

The native integration with Office products. Our end users appreciated this.

What do you dislike most about the product?

Fragile nightly processes still plague us.

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

Microsoft as a vendor was not involved. We did not like this. We would have appreciated their involvement along the way.

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

Would have spent more time evaluating alignment with our main ERP, Oracle E-Business Suite. Would have talked to other customers that had chosen the same path. To that end, we have started over, and are moving to Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition with OBIA packs for installed EBS modules.

Low cost of ownership; skills can be spread throughout an entire team.

    Overall Comment

Ease of implementation, small cost of ownership. Our focus can be on expanding offerings rather than just keeping with patches, etc.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

Go with a technology that is easy for most IT members to pick up.

What do you like most about the product or service?

The cost of ownership and the quick time to make changes.

What do you dislike most about the product?

The interface between Office and the data connections and SharePoint can be a little clunky.

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

Support for charts in SSRS is a little clunky; dashboards in SharePoint are difficult to create, use, and print. Someone will want to print out a chart at some point.

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

Consider the culture of the organization when introducing new technologies or concepts.

Start small with Proof of concept and roll out to the rest of the business functions.

What do you like most about the product or service?

    N/a

What do you dislike most about the product?

Long term strategy in terms of MDM.

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

Provide more flexibility in terms of data connectors.

Great products, but many are piecemeal.

    Overall Comment

Great products, but many are piecemeal, so you take a little here and a little there and our IT organization did not vet the needs or potential work involved. It has a lot of drawbacks, as the decision was entirely made in our IT department, without any input from the internal stakeholders responsible for the product. Because of this, the initiative is failing. They hired me on in August 2014 and I'm responsible for reconciling these views moving forward.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

Research all options before settling on one vendor or product, including considering blending those best of breed capabilities.

What do you like most about the product or service?

It has some very flexible connectivity and accessibility through other products, so our cube development won't have been in vane.

What do you dislike most about the product?

Limited on the visualization end and cannot quickly adapt to user provided data inputs for quick ad hoc analyses.

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

It isn't really their fault. They have great products, but many are piecemeal, so you take a little here and a little there and our IT organization did not vet the needs or potential work involved prior to buying the licensing.

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

Have a primary stakeholder responsible for pulling all information together from cross functional teams. Utilize cross-functional teams to assess needs and requirements PRIOR to implementing in technology. Fully assess best of breed products and capabilities prior to defining product requirements. Develop product based on business needs, not just on one vendor's capabilities.

Product(s): SQL Server Analysis Services / Reporting Services

Ease of use along with overall cost adds to the quick implementation of this tool.

    Overall Comment

There are some limitations to the software and nuances that can make it not user friendly. But overall cost along with integration into the Microsoft product line is less.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

If cost isn't a matter then going with a different product would be advisable. The implementation is easy, maintenance is easy and development is easy. Upgrading the product is also backwards compatible, so if older software is similar, then you should just upgrade to it.

What do you like most about the product or service?

Ease of use and affordability. Industry standard, so bringing in consultants for additional work is easier to find.

What do you dislike most about the product?

It's rigid like nuances which can cause some development time to extend. Working with other platforms, utilizing external ODBC can be bothersome.

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

Included more tools within the tool set. More often than not, you have to code additional functions in or purchase third party software.

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

We would probably go with the same product. Overall decision was based on price.

Migrations for this version were simple and clear.

    Overall Comment

While SSRS is a great end user product, the implementation procedures are not always clean from vers. to vers. and technical support is weak and expensive.

    Be prepared.

What do you like most about the product or service?

    Easability.

What do you dislike most about the product?

Migrations to newer versions are not always clean.

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

Better tech options when running into problems.

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

Add more time to planning the implementation.

Product(s): SQL Server Analysis Services / Reporting Services

Overall an OK but not a top end tool.

    Overall Comment

Not performing at the level that we anticipated for report generation and response.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

Make sure you evaluate the download time from your Oracle to SQL databases.

What do you like most about the product or service?

Adopts users easily in a self service environment.

What do you dislike most about the product?

Too informal on reporting (excel, datadums using SSIS), too easy to manupulate data

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

    Built or marketed better APIs.

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

Consolidate data first and evaluate compatibility with our warehouse architecture.

Setting up complex Kerberos security. Hope it can be made better and easier but still secure.

    Had a better training material.

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

Spend more time in understanding the capabilities of the product and related offerings.
