Product(s): NetIQ Access Governance Suite (AGS)

Beautiful plumbing but the Access Request UI is in need of a major upgrade.

    Overall Comment

NetIQ's Access Governance is comprised of two products - Access Requests and Access Reviews. We moved to NetIQ because they are the only vendor in the industry that offers a real-time-event-driven architecture that doesn't require heavy, burdensome collections that take days to complete when dealing with millions of users in our identity vault. The UI for Access Requests is poor at best, however, we moved forward on the promise of their roadmap and a commitment to modernize the UI so that it is at least as good as their Access Review product interface, which is excellent. The hardest part of the implementation was developing the REST drivers. NetIQ consultants are the first to admit how ugly the code can get when wading into XML innards wrapped by REST end points.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

If you have millions of identities, avoid a collection process at all cost--you will fail when it comes to access requests and entitlements.

What do you like most about the product or service?

NetIQ provides even-driven data which means real-time provisioning for access requests.

What do you dislike most about the product?

    The Access Request user interface.

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

I wish access requests and access reviews were not two entirely different products. One has a horrendous UI and the other has an excellent modern UI.

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

We underestimated the complexity of the migration/integration and only scheduled a consultant for one month. What was thought to be a 3-4 month project has become a solid 9 month project with a consultant onsite four of those months. We could have reduced churn by booking the same consultant for several months up front as opposed to losing the consultant we had and having to start over with a new one. The 9 month effort was completed with 1 FTE engineer, 1 FTE developer, 1 FTE product manager, and 1 consultant for 4 months.

    Product(s): NetIQ Identity Manager

Underestimated the need to change business processes to make this completely successful.

    Overall Comment

Solution works reliably and scales well as our organization continues to grow.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

Spend 80% on planning and process and 20% on the technology. Many good technologies are available in the marketplace but all will fail if you don't fix bad processes or ones that don't align with the technology.

What do you like most about the product or service?

    Proven technology, reliable and flexible.

What do you dislike most about the product?

Slower than I would like in responding to market and business changes with new feature function in the product.

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

I wish they were less accommodating and more prescriptive with their implementation plans.

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

Spend more time educating business sponsors on the need to change business process to support the technology changes. We tried to replicate manual human processes with automation rather than designing a new processes to support an automated approach to IAM.

Integration & Deployment - Overall comment

Would have liked to see more emphasis on process during the integration.

    Product(s): NetIQ Identity Manager

Implementation was challenging and needed more analysis.

    Overall Comment

The product is good but support is limited. Need to buy extra support.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

Go to the details as that may be missed.

What do you like most about the product or service?

    User Interface.

What do you dislike most about the product?

Behavior is different in internal environments compared to production environment.

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

    None

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

Production environment is different that internal environment.

    Product capabilities - overall comment

Product is capable of the most basic needs but it was a need to do some customization to accommodate password management.

Service & support - overall comment

Support is limited in time and need to buy premium package for a faster response.

Integration & Deployment - Overall comment

Deployment was done by a partner consultant company and took longer.

    Product(s): NetIQ Identity Manager

Netiq provides both flexibility and control which is important to make us successful.

    Overall Comment

I like the strategy and direction proposed. The releases were slow at first, but I really like the recent traction and feature improvements made.

What do you like most about the product or service?

The full offering is very comprehensive.

What do you dislike most about the product?

The IDM Home interface is lacking, but it something that is quickly getting better.

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

They nickel and dime customers for every driver/connector. Netiq should make all their connectors available with the product for free, then just charge on a user license model. It will help to improve customers ability to expand the product and entrench it into the security landscape.

    Product(s): NetIQ Identity Manager

Product provides many features but we ran into many minor issues with its functionality.

    Overall Comment

I found the product to be difficult to manage and maintain in the long term. I feel it's probably a combination of the implementing vendor and the product.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

Make sure you have stakeholder buy-in and support. If you will implement provisoining workflows, there may be other work involved in cleaning up your user stores. We did not realize at the beginning how errors during provisioning would be handled.

What do you like most about the product or service?

Ability to synchronize data among many systems. Flexibility of the dirxml engine.

What do you dislike most about the product?

Difficult to manage the many components and logs that are kept in multiple places.

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

Provide more vision for our solution and a better roadmap.

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

Yes. We would look more at the flexibility of the product and its ability to streamline user experience. We would also do more research on operational concerns.

    Product capabilities - overall comment

I think the product has good capabilities but it fell short on implementation.

    Product(s): NetIQ Identity Manager

Great directory structure, architecture needs to be updated.

    Overall Comment

The overall exprience was a little more painful that it should have been due to increased timelines and lack of built-in reporting.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

Plan more, review the product capabilities and plan for hiring engineers vs. just analysts.

What do you like most about the product or service?

    The ability to customize it.

What do you dislike most about the product?

Scalability, the amount of people and time that is required to implement it and the lack of analytics.

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

Not market the product as requiring minimum level of administration.

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

Plan more, invest more time in our business processes and structure.

    NetIQ IM for Financial.

    Overall Comment

I feel we did not get enough guidance to have a successful rollout.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

    Keep it simple.

What do you like most about the product or service?

    The interface.

What do you dislike most about the product?

    Lack of reporting.

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

    Guided us more.

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

Start with a road map first then look for a product.

    Product capabilities - overall comment

We did not purchase enough of the suite to qualify here.

Integration & Deployment - Overall comment

The integration was complex and is still difficult to get a hands-on.

    Product(s): NetIQ Identity Manager

Generally reliable but has JAVA issues.

    Overall Comment

Overall a good product, just have issues with crashing. Support is sometimes slow to respond and doesn't seem to be able to recreate the issues in non-prod.

What do you like most about the product or service?

    Speed of the backend eDirectory.

What do you dislike most about the product?

    The designer product.

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

Implement on more of the product.

Integration & Deployment - Overall comment

Deployment started slow, quickly picked up significant work on the front end, trying to figure out how to get away from Jboss ASAP.

    Product(s): NetIQ Identity Manager

Lesson learned without sacrificing sanity or usability.

    Overall Comment

Vendor has a very good product offering. It can do a lot of things and generally it is fairly flexible. Some biases regarding the ease of customization should be mentioned with the product, however, if you have capable engineers, and are creative you will be able to accomplish a lot.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

This is a great product that needs a dedicated engineering staff to grow. Do not save money on good engineering resources and make sure you get programmers.

What do you like most about the product or service?

eDirectory is a great product, everything about it is well designed.

What do you dislike most about the product?

User application platform is very roboust, but it has large overheads.

What one thing do you wish the vendor did differently?

Heavy reliance on java, since the vendor used to own the Mono project, I wish they were more .Net oriented, as jboss / tomcat platform is so suspitble to memory leaks.

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

Plan ahead and examine the existing processes more meticulously. Spend more time upfront, and engage all business sectors, as well as spend time on cleaning up the data vs immidiate migration that can save a lot of time.

Integration & Deployment - Overall comment

Jboss/Tomcat are painful to setup in a cluster well.

    Product(s): NetIQ Identity Manager

Great product, very customizable and modular.

    Overall Comment

We've been able to maintain a good relationship with the vendor.

What one piece of advice would you give other prospective customers?

Understand your processes before architecture and implementation. Do not expect to do everything at one time.

What do you like most about the product or service?

    It's very customizable and stable.

What do you dislike most about the product?

While it's customizable and modular, it can be a bit complex in nature.

If you could start over, what would your organization do differently?

Include Role Management as part of the rollout / implementation.
