Experience with Mimecast Services for Outlook vs. Help Desk Administration Console

The Mimecast Services tab/add-in for Outlook has been a great help for users to perform various tasks such as checking for On-Hold Messages. It has been relatively easy to train people to use it independently, which cuts down on calls to our Help Desk. The Administration Console which we use on the IT Help Desk, however, could use improvements as far as the overall speed for search results and define the category terms more clearly.

Great product, initial configuration is tough but support is excellent

Technical demonstrations and pilot was painless, product functions very well. Policies applied in ways we did not predict but the product support is excellent and got things ironed out quickly.

A great product suite which enables an agile rollout to minimize organizational impact.

The Mimecast secure email gateway has been a great addition to our security platform. We have implemented several features in sequence, easing our company into the process and allowing Mimecast to build their database of trusted domains, etc. in our environment. It has greatly reduced spam and phishing attempts, and basically eliminated the success of the few attempts which get through.

Sound company but not best for healthcare

Well known and respected vendor in the marketplace, however, do not feel their solutions are a good fit for healthcare. Their lack of being able to do contextual based filtering created many false positives and frustration with our user base. Also, there was a lot of system administration required due to the lack of available scripts, templates, etc. out of the box. Overall, I think their corporate vision is sound, just need to make some changes to be more accommodating in varies industries.

The implementation was done in stages and went remarkably well.

The implementation was done in stages and went remarkably well. First, we modified our MX records to route via Mimecast. Second, we made the necessary Mimecast to Exchange server configurations. Third, we installed the Mimecast software on our Outlook clients. There were no noticable outages to the Outlook users. The SAML single sign-on capability did not initially work or wasn't supported by our provider, however, this was fixed with an upgrade to the Mimecast software within 3 months.

Mimecast Makes Life Easier

Mimecast was very easy to implement and took the risk associated with email down to a minuscule level. This implementation took a few hours of preparation (opening ports, rules, planning for MX record changes) and about 10 minutes to make the changes. We performed a two-phased approach funnelling our outbound email through Mimecast first, then swapping the inbound. We ended up with less than 5 minutes of "down" time. This product has great security and management features.
