Conclusion

Organizations should be encouraged that efforts to enhance their information infrastructures will have long term benefits in many areas, not just the top of mind issues that get the project started.

A planning model, appropriate for the organization's complexity and budget, is an excellent way to determine priorities and stay on track. Large organizations can choose among planning models such as Gartner's Enterprise Information Management or IBM's Information Agenda. Smaller organizations may find a core application, such as ERP, will deliver the necessary structure.

Infrastructure projects are excellent investments during recessions because they can decrease long term operating expenses and improve competitiveness. For information-based initiatives, a solid information infrastructure is required to provide secure, reliable access to information. Enhanced applications must do a better job of delivering the right information to the right people at the right time. When the infrastructure and applications are in synch with the business goals, information can add significant value to the organization.
