We had 100k+ employees but about 45k had laptops with VPN. We had Virtual Desktops off and on over the years. It’s matured significantly where perhaps 10-20% of those laptops could be Virtual now but cost of their in office desktop vs laptop still isn’t enough savings

Virtual is great for short term contractors, and situations where perhaps acquisitions need to participate in network before there is a dedicated link between networks.

Each situation really must be studied technically and financially for the best solution. (And security considerations too). ;)

Depends on the needs of the business.  No one size fits all solution here.  Definitely recommend looking into SASE/SSE solutions here.  Also, VPN is just too risky these days especially when it comes to 3rd party access.

Without a doubt - Technical Debt! It's a ball and chain that creates an ever increasing drag on any organization, stifles innovation, and prevents transformation.
