Has anyone recently used ServiceNow for both software and hardware asset management?  How has it worked out?  Anything you wish you knew before implementing?

I didn't personally manage the implementation. I was a customer/participant.  I was the application owner of a large portfolio of applications when we switched from REMEDY to SERVICE NOW in the cloud.  The start of the Service Desk aspect was run smoothly.  Getting all the knowledge articles in, a little more difficult.   Getting the desktop/laptop inventory into Service Now went very well.  However, AUTO Discovery for any other hardware or software did not go well.  I have my opinions as to why.  It was partially due to how hard it is.  The team also didn't get supplied with the best talent in the organization so they struggled on simple technical details.  For example, if you use Auto Discovery and it says you have an HP Printer model XYZ, but the MAC Address says it's to a CISCO switch, you can't trust the discovery.  When you then telnet to that IP and it answers back with CISCO login... well then you know at least it is CISCO gear and discovery was wrong.  I debated with the internal team doing inventory and they just struggled with those types of issues and just went in circles.  They didn't want to load anything into CMDB unless it was "perfect" vs. Auto-Discover what they could, and then assign validation out to various hardware and software owners.   I was involved for over 3 years (130k person company +40k contractors and service providers) and they never got Auto-Discovery data loaded.   I think last count I was aware of they had only about 300 applications loaded vs. the 3000+ we actually need the Service Desk to be able to answer or route tickets on.

I would prioritize which modules you want running first, and realize for Auto-Discovery, Total Cost of Ownership, Financials, you are going to need a very broad and diversified team depending on how large your company is.

If you have some specific questions, I may be able to answer them, but again I was involved, but it wasn't my project or my team's project.

Not recently. I used this at my previous employer and it worked out very well.
