What’s your approach to cloud cost management tools? Do you see value in paying for third-party services to monitor cloud spend, or have you found more cost-effective alternatives?

As a manufacturing company primarily serving the automotive industry, we use Azure to capture and process shop floor data in real time. We monitor usage through our Microsoft CSP, but do not use a third-party monitoring tool. I am interested in tools that can compare the performance of virtual machines and recommend optimization opportunities.

We are implementing Apptio’s Cloudability to manage our multi-cloud environment, which includes all five major hyperscalers. We use chargebacks to the business for cloud services, making a FinOps system essential for tagging, allocations, and chargebacks. While we are early in our deployment, we see potential ROI in streamlining processes and avoiding manual errors.<br>

We do not use a third-party tool; instead, we monitor cloud spend internally. We limit access and utilization to specific use cases and engage in showbacks and invoicing to inform business units of their responsibilities, which has a significant impact on utilization.

With 80% of our applications running on AWS, we launched a FinOps initiative at the end of last year to monitor and optimize cloud costs, including spot instances and baseline costs. We also reorganized our account setup to distribute resources more effectively.

We do not currently use cloud cost management tools, as our cloud adoption is still a work in progress. For example, we are still deploying M365, so we are not yet in the market for such tools.
