Currently in our Enterprise Architecture tool and repository, we have a Business Capability Model (BCM) and a Technology Capability Model (TCM). Enabling Applications (e.g., SAP, Salesforce etc.) are mapped to the BCM, and enabling technologies (e.g., API gateway) are mapped to the TCM. However, some capabilities like Data Management are common to both models and we are trying to figure out best way to represent that. How have you organized your capability model? Is it a single model containing business and technical capabilities or two separate models? If later, how are you organizing common capabilities like Data Management?

Hi Ravi, It's indeed a not so easy choice. Data Management (DM) being sub-capability in almost any corporate system whether it's ERP, CRM or SRM and so on.
I would say that the positioning of the DM would depend on the audience. The most accurate representation I feel is to have (for a generic BMC) the Data Management under a central/enabling technical capability called Data Platform (next to Data Engineering, Governance, Compliance, Security,...).
If we are to represent the BCM to the Finance team then reflecting the Data & Analytics capabilities of the ERP in the BCM is then crucial, but I believe that we don't have to have it in a generic/general BMC as you pointed out, it would show as if it's some sort of duplication.

Hi Ravi, very interesting question, which we have observed recently, too, but not pursued, yet. Happy to follow ideas. Apologize not contributing with solution/idea this time :-(
