A data fabric is a modern approach to integrating data from multiple sources, while MDM is a traditional approach to managing data domains.

A data fabric approach focuses on the integration and ambient orchestration of data, rather than on the management of specific data domains. The goal of an MDM solution is to ensure that all applications and systems across the enterprise use the same accurate and consistent master data, which is important for effective decision-making and compliance.

Both have their place in a data strategy.

Data fabric is a concept that’s gained traction within data management because it’s arguably the first technology strand that truly begins to de-silo application data.  A data fabric seeks to establish a contemporary architecture to connect the data and metadata inside those silos.  Along the way, it enables the development of a permissions-based system to control access to a single copy, a crucial step toward ending the age-old practice of making endless copies of data.
