Has anyone here successfully deployed iPads as their primary device for salespeople or field staff? If so, how has the experience been? And is the ROI obvious?

We use iPad based point of sales for all our agency field work force so that they can complete the financial needs analysis, proposal illustration, eApplication, payment etc and close the complex sales process for insurance. The benefits are seamless,  speedy straight thru policy issuance which results in more sales, reduced operational cost and superior customer experience.

Surface go & pro are good alternatives for iPads.

We’re increasingly seeing that iPad pros--Surfaces to a lesser degree--are a great mobile solution. And so our job is to make it so it doesn’t really matter what the end point is and they all have to be brought into our secure environment. So we have to know about them and we have to integrate with them. But the iPads are great because a lot of people have a train ride. So they need to review documents and be able to red-line a document on the train.

Without a doubt - Technical Debt! It's a ball and chain that creates an ever increasing drag on any organization, stifles innovation, and prevents transformation.
