I'm interested in where organisations are putting Conversational AI Designer roles. Who do they report into? Do they sit with business/product or within Technology?

Under the Technology office and usually report to the Director of Technology.

We have a product design team and these folks are building competency in Conversational AI design. This team is ultimately under our CTO in our org, but separate from our tech/engineering team. What's interesting is the blurring of roles and tools involved, especially in things like rapid prototyping and POCs.

Generally Conversational AI Designer is an individual who could create AI Bot / Customer interaction journeys providing AI with different versions of possible inquiries and corresponding responses. There are several easy-to-use drag-and-drop tools available on the market for AI designers to create this content. Therefore, technology does not play a huge role in defining these interactions. However, I see two main applications for Conversational AI technology: 1. Customer interactions during the sales process 2. Customer interaction inside the software offered by the company. In the first case, AI Designer should probably report to a Product Marketing/Business leader. In the second scenario, I would still say that the Product executive would be the best person to report to. However, the firm could also benefit from having AI Designer work with the QA/Customer Support team members or team leaders who generally have great insights into the type of inquiries customers are making.
