CISO in Consumer Goods, 201 - 500 employees
CIO in a different vertical if you haven’t before - or join a couple boards to give you something fresh until you are able to make the one you want.

CEO in Services (non-Government), 2 - 10 employees
Many CIOs are trying combined roles - for example CIO + CDO (Chief Digital officer). American Airlines just hired a CIO to be their CIO + CDO.

Other CIOs are becoming CIO in different industry, to learn how IT helps businesses in different industry. I went from CIO in a high-tech company to a beauty company. Trust me retail IT is much different than a high-tech IT.

Of course, joining a board (like suggested before) will also give you a flavor of other industries.
CIO in Finance (non-banking), 51 - 200 employees
For the many transformational and inspirational CIOs, they have gravitated towards both public and private boards. No more Monday scaries!
CIO in Education, 501 - 1,000 employees
It depends. Can be COO, can be CIDO. You might even decide to go on your own as a CEO of your own business.
Co-Founder in Services (non-Government), 2 - 10 employees
Consulting services can be an option.
