Take a platform-based approach and coordinate as much as possible. Avoid lift-and-shift unless speed to market is critical. We have refocused on maximizing value with integrated platforms, rather than relying on many separate tools. This has improved patching, backup success, and overall efficiency.

Avoiding lift-and-shift is generally safer unless speed is critical. If you do lift-and-shift, implement a FinOps program early to manage the initial spike in spend. In our three-year migration, our FinOps program reduced cloud spend by 50%, maintaining flat spend as we completed the migration.

Strategically, training your staff is essential. Invest in training, and lean on your hyperscalers to help fund it. Automation is a double-edged sword; infrastructure as code provides consistency, but can slow things down if over-engineered. Tactically, right-size compute, use appropriate storage, and challenge old on-prem patterns. Power off resources when not in use, especially in non-production environments. Make costs visible to as many people as possible. When product owners see their spend and can reduce it, it becomes a priority and a positive accolade in their reviews.

There is some pain involved as we introduce new capabilities and spread knowledge throughout the team. We are cost-constrained and must reprioritize duties, but staff are adapting well, recognizing that these changes add to their career progression and knowledge.
