What is the single definitive factor to you that makes an “AI agent” truly an AI agent, and not just automation that’s been rebranded?

For me, the AI has to include an 'inference' step i.e. an action is taken that is not defined by programatic rules.

"The intelligence", the way I understand it, in traditional automation the rules are coded and base in predefined rules. With AI agents, the difference would be in applying artificial intelligence for deciding on the next step or steps.

We are studying to build new thermoelectric power generators. As the CIO I’d like to influence this process (it has not initiated yet), by unifying operational data in order to: 1) increase the automatization of the plant - and reduce costs; 2) have this data available for further utilization (AI, Analytics, etc). One of the main barriers is that a thermoelectric has several pieces of equipment and each one has different software (and data) stack.
