We are considering implementing Oracle Cloud Enterprise Performance Management (EPM); Oracle has recently told us that Oracle Enterprise Data Management (EDM) is required. Our ERP is SAP. Looking for anyone who was implemented Oracle EPM: 1) was EDM required (why or why not?) and 2) how well did it integrate with SAP (or if your non-Oracle ERP)?

I've implemented Oracle EPM with SAP. Oracle EDM wasn't strictly required, but it drastically simplified things. EDM has pre-built connectors and a flexible data model, making SAP integration way smoother. If clean data mapping is a priority, I'd say EDM is a worthwhile investment. It'll save headaches down the line.

In some cases, Oracle Enterprise Data Management (EDM) may not be required for implementing Oracle Cloud EPM with SAP ERP integration (btw the Oracle Cloud EPM - is this PBCS, FCCS or what? not to discourage but Oracle Cloud version EPM is still very immature compare to their on-premise, so its better to double-check on that before going full-steam). This could occur if you already have robust data governance practices and a well-established master data management system in place, independent of Oracle EDM. Additionally, if the integration requirements are primarily focused on extracting data from SAP ERP into Oracle EPM for reporting and analysis purposes, without significant data transformation or consolidation needs, then EDM may be deemed unnecessary.

However, leveraging Oracle EDM can offer several benefits, especially in complex data environments. It provides a centralized platform for managing master data across Oracle applications, ensuring data consistency, accuracy, and governance. By incorporating Oracle EDM into the implementation strategy, you can streamline SAP to Oracle data integration processes, enhance data quality, and minimize the risk of errors or discrepancies in reporting.

Perhaps, doing a pros/cons analysis with or without this tool, alongside side your org's data maturity, and keeping other factors in mind (commercials, risk appetite, long-term strategic plans) may be a worthwhile exercise.

Going through an oracle cloud implementation today. First off EPM and ERP are completely different products so don’t see a reason why ERP cannot be swapped out with SAP.
Secondly we are not using EDM. We do have an on prem hierarchy management tool which is effectively integrated with EPM as a separate /standalone integration.
Happy to share further details. Thanks,

If you wish to keep the two chart of accounts in sync, then EDM is advisable. However, it isn't a necessity. This can also be achieved with flat file export and load.

You need EDM also in case u need to integrate metadata with SAP.

Yes, in many Oracle EPM implementations, EDM is required for effective data governance, consistency, and integration across various EPM applications. It ensures a centralised approach to manage and govern metadata and hierarchies, improving overall data quality and reliability.
