Is anyone else considering an investment in Salesforce Data Cloud as a CDP with the option for direct activation, in addition to ingesting segments for more complex journey orchestration in a DXP like Marketing Cloud Engagement, etc? We're a large enterprise B2B software company considering the purchase of a CDP and DXP and have narrowed the choice to Salesforce where we have 2 solution architectures: 1) Segment and Engage in Salesforce Marketing Cloud Engagement, and 2) Segment in Salesforce Data Cloud and Engage in Salesforce Marketing Cloud Engagement.

We are also considering Data Cloud as a CDP and would leverage SFMC and Health Cloud. Our current thinking is your option #2 for the architecture but haven't fully committed to it.

Short answer yes, at my previous role I stood up a Salesforce Development arm with the sole purpose of utilizing Salesforce as the organizations CDP and DXP. We leveraged Marketing Cloud and Healthcloud. There were some complexities mostly due to the organizations piecemeal setup previously, but Salesforce we a very robust platform that allow for seemless integrations. It was costly though and required a good number of FTE's and Contractors to setup.
