They are pretty much the same in terms of performance and data structure.

I believe, it depends: Firebase if you need a quick-to-set-up, real-time database with integrated services for mobile or Web application but I would prefer MongoDB for handling complex data structures with robust querying capabilities.
About the sizing Firebase for small/medium projects and MondoDB fits better medium/large ones.
