Ever the contrarian, I am going to say, yes, they are important...
But for people who generally only value business acumen. E.g. we should be training and certifying so called line-of-business staff on technical competencies. It's a new world. No longer should we be talking about the business value of IT, but about the IT value of business. We are losing lots of cognitive bandwidth dumbing down and translating technical language and concepts, instead of training up business staff who still believe it is not necessary to get with it.
