This is an excellent question, and I am not totally surprised by the survey responses. I agree that at a higher and more executive level, strategic focus is paramount, but with how business is rapidly changing, not investing in your own technical acumen and relying too heavily on your team can be a position of weakness. Unfortunately, I have seen this several times, and more senior leaders or executives are put in situations of making uninformed decisions based on bad information, team members leaving, and not being able to possess the knowledge to drive strategy to real-world tangible results or some cases, you can become outdated.

By no means is the implication to invest in becoming the resident expert, but you must invest in evolving technical acumen to be effective as a leader and strategist and hold your team accountable.
