We embraced ITIL and certified a lot of people. The primary value though was documented definitions of services, SLAs, ownership of services. Once everyone knows the vocabulary and roles and responsibilities are documented you are immediately better off than prior. This is true with any framework. Agreement and alignment help everyone IT and Business move in the same direction
I recently wrote this about TOGAF,
"TOGAF, like any professional qualification, is simply a framework that proves you know the theory.
But knowing the theory is a different kettle of fish to being an architect"
Sub out TOGAF with ITIL and Architect with effective ITSM aligned organisation and it still works.
In my opinion, the ITIL 4 represents a significant advancement over its predecessors and certainly provides a structured way to define infrastructure with proper governance and necessary documentation. However, like any framework, it may lack the flexibility to keep pace with new paradigms, such as those introduced by AI/GenAI. It's excellent for establishing the foundational pillars of your team and organization, but it should be considered just a starting point.
