The other thing I'd recommend is getting the perspective of your internal customers in the first 30 days.

Must get an internal and external perspective quickly and rationalize.  For Internal I prefer to have each leader do an operational review, with all other leaders present.  This helps me identify how the groups are working together (or not) and to better understand the org design and effectiveness.  Org Charts != Reality in many cases.

As "something else" I would meet customers to understands their needs, plans and ambitions as well as their satisfaction to ensure that our department's activities and priorities align with theirs.
