Software Implementation team is either a part of the business group they are supporting or the central infra group, depending on the type of application we would be implementing. Structuring it based on business or portfolio keeps it more organized. And at times these are formed on need basis.
It is the same team that works the help desk and performs higher level troubleshooting.
It depends on the product you are selling. There are many products which are fully cloud-based and decentralized, relevant DEVOPS team can handle the implementation. But if you are selling an ERP for a larger organization, you must have a well-trained team to handle it. It is comprised of a product lead, technical members as well as good negotiators. The structure depends on the module, customer, and location.
We have a dedicated software implementation team for our SAAS platform. Working in parallel with our platform support team (devops) to push out updates to the live environment using github. Structure is director of sw development with developers.
Implementation teams, when centralised, grow into becoming functional SMEs and several career paths emanate from there - business analysis, product management, support and troubleshooting, pre-sales and client implementations as well. So definitely rewarding to have a dedicated implementation team, something we are reaping benefits from.
