We are currently doing this and it is a very slow process, even with a state of the art data scanning/categorization software. I am confident we will get it done, ultimately, but the biggest challenge is ensuring executive leadership that this is a valuable exercise and will take time. Everyone wants "quick wins".

There is moderate confidence across many organizations in their ability to locate and categorize unstructured data within hybrid environments. While modern data discovery and classification tools provide significant capabilities, challenges remain—especially with legacy systems, unmanaged file shares, and inconsistencies in metadata. Continued investment in automation, unified governance frameworks, and cross-platform integration is essential to improve visibility and control over unstructured data.
