How would you describe your job to someone who doesn’t work in finance?

CFO, Self-employed
I would describe my job as a strategic partner to the President, the Executive Team, and the business units. I also engage with the board of trustees on all matters financial, compliance as well as on business strategy matters. However, I wouldn't be able to do my job if not for my amazing team who works diligently and collaboratively day in and day out. Having a strong team allows me to focus on the bigger picture and be the strategic and innovating leader that I strive to be.

I tried to answer this question via a blog post I did many years ago.  Defining FP&A to a stranger at a cocktail party. https://www.fpaexperts.com/defining-fpa-to-a-stranger-at-a-cocktail-party/

As in most cases, it depends on the context and people you are communicating with. Since I am also a CPA, I often default to saying I am an accountant even though I have not done pure accounting for many years, but people seem to understand that.
