It’s all depends on how large the environment and what’s in the scope for decommission. For a 100 racks environment, including scraping the disks, recycling the cabling to decommissioning the HVAC and DC floor takes around 2 months.

While the expense is small and there is some possibility for a bad actor to acquire and use for malicious activity, I question keeping domains of this sort "forever."
