How will organizations take care of their employees and make sure their well-being is at the forefront in a new normal, whatever that is?

I feel like the human connection is what was really suffering in the beginning of the pandemic. I keep going back to agility. I keep going back to how we are evolving.  The whole concept of exponential change, the kind of environment that we're in has always been like "Yeah, change is going to happen but how are we going to adapt to it quickly?" It's a lot of “let's try this out, let's see if this is working.” But for management to be evolving with the times they need to keep a temperature check on how people are reacting. Everyone's going to have a different way of responding to change. Some people are thriving, right? The introverts are having a blast. They love this. They don't have to be tortured in this way, in a meeting where three extroverts are like, "Yay! Rah-rah-rah!" And they're thinking it's that 80-20 that always used to happen, right?

It really, really helps to have that soft skill of knowing how to pull people in and how to understand each person's needs. It really becomes about what kind of a human connection you have with your team members and your managers. How do you involve everybody? How do you engage with everyone?

I don't see that things can go back to normal in a year from now. Companies will jump on the bandwagon and want to collaborate and want to be there, but some people have left those types of companies.

You have to ensure it's a safer but also comfortable environment. As human beings, we are social animals. When you put people in a building, they want to talk to each other, so we need to enable that but we have to do it safely. We don't want another pandemic. Another hotspot. When you bring back people to work, the lingering fear of COVID is still going to be there. Who is vaccinated? Who is not vaccinated even though the vaccine is available? Not everyone is going to be. So, how can I make sure the neighbor sitting next to me, the people in the conference room, or the person who is visiting me is vaccinated? Then you're getting into HIPAA and compliance issues. Are we going to enforce that they show the vaccination record? Will employees have to continue to wear a mask? Then if you need to have a mask, people don't want to come to work. It's not preferable to work with a mask. If COVID concerns are still impacting collaboration, culture, and teamwork, then why should I come back to work? That part has to be clearly addressed and thought through.

Fortunately or unfortunately, the same way they do now. We've been very careful during the pandemic about physically keeping them safe. I'm not sure we've done well enough on the mental health side of things. That concerns me both now and for the new normal.

So, as leaders, understanding what's in play and circling back with those in charge to make sure we're listening to employees and addressing their well-being is hopefully how we'll do it.
