What has motivated your biggest career transitions?
You said you didn't really think about it in a very deliberate fashion but I think the common thread is, you've always held kind of two roles. Is that something which you were very deliberate about like, "Hey look, I'm not just going to take this aspect." Did you ever think I'm just going to be a full-time CHRO or a full-time COO if that opportunity presented itself?
I guess my point is that there wasn't a whole lot of trying to architect this thing. It was more taking things as they came along.
Then I was asked if I would like to help Pivotal with their business transformations with our customers. I had never been in a customer facing role before, but the only way that one can grow is when they are in a level of discomfort. And so I was like, "Okay, this is something that I have never done before but probably I could." What actually got me going is understanding that the position is the same. You're just looking at it from a different perspective. You're still trying to improve the quality of life of people. The people that you're trying to improve are different now and you're trying to solve multiple problems of different customers rather than one single customer's problems. And the minute I started embracing that, I was like, "I've actually been doing it." I never acknowledged that I did it and so it wasn't such a hard switch. I also love to talk so that helps, but yeah, it wasn't that hard from a mindset perspective.
