Do organizations have an Enterprise Data Architecture discipline? Data Architecture in the distributed environment intersects with Technology, Applications, Analytics, Cloud Platforms, and Security. Where does it organizationally fit?

Pragmatically this sits with the Data Manager and CIO who has oversight of all the system integration points and understands the business strategy. If you are a security-first organisation then you need CISO oversight in the Architecture also. It is a complex set of understanding of inputs, outputs, and flow that best suits your organisation, and the Board's appetite for risk. I would say it is a multi-discipline that requires group collaboration.
Organizations do have Enterprise Data Architecture disciplines. Sometimes they are not necessarily part of Enterprise Architecture org and are part of CDO org. The idea of having this as a central function helps drive a consistent governance strategy across the organization.. Drawbacks of having federated Data Strategy at BU or CIOs level create lot more data silos and difficult to govern this data in an uniform way; it is also difficult to democratize the data within the organization as it is owned by various parties. The Enterprise Data Architecture like any other enterprise function collaborates with other shared services like Cyber, Platform / Cloud infrastructure teams to rollout an enterprise offering. These enterprise offerings could be Data Governance, Data Quality toolsets and/or Enterprise Data Platform (to build Data Products or democratize data or to monetize it). In case of federated teams’ individual teams work with shared services to host their data, but it helps if the data management standards are governed by a central Enterprise Data Architecture team or by Data office.
